When confirming a load/shipment the system errors out with “WMS00197? (cannot change sign of bin quantity)

Troubleshooting

Problem

When confirming a load/shipment the system errors out with “WMS00197? (cannot change sign of bin quantity)

Symptom

Sometime while confirming a shipment, load, or adjusting out inventory from a bin location, the system throws WMS00197 error.
Error Message
WMS00197 - Cannot change sign of the bin quantity.

Resolving The Problem

The system throws an error - "WMS00197: Cannot change the sign of the bin quantity", when an operation tries to change the sign of bin location quantity. This is the only time system throws this error.

For example if an operation (e.g. confirm shipment) tries to remove -6 from pack_bin which has currently only +2 quantity in it, this error will be thrown, because the result value goes from a +ve to -ve value i.e. -4.
Ideally, whatever is packed (after packing, inventory goes to pack_bin) is supposed to be shipped out.
In the above example, the system tries to ship out (-6) more than what is currently available in the pack bin (+2)!
Ideally, this should not happen. If it does, look at what caused this discrepancy and call Sterling Commerce Support for further data analysis.
