Symptom
When testing SMTP e-mail notifications a pop-up error is generated.

Cause
When setting up Gentran:Server to send e-mail notifications via SMTP if the e-mail server requires authentication (user name and password) to log in, the "My server requires authentication" checkmark box must be checked and the "Account Name" and "Password" fields must contain valid entries.
Diagnosing The Problem
Turn on the SMTP logging on the CONFIG.exe > Audit/Notification tab. Run a test. Examine the log. Success will show like:

Resolving The Problem
A) Ensure the Gentran configuration is passing an acceptable account for authentication.
To configure the "My server requires authentication" section of the Audit Notification E-mail Notifications section of Gentran:Server Configuration, follow the steps below:
1. Open Gentran:Server Configuration, select the Audit/Notification tab, click on the Server button, and select the Notifications tab.
2. Check the "My server requires authentication" checkbox.
3. In the Account Name field, enter the account name used to log into the e-mail account specified in the E-mail address field.
4. In the Password field, enter the password for the account specified in the Account Name field.
5. Click the Apply button, click the OK button to save and close out of the Gentran:Server Audit Notification Properties.
6. Click the Apply button, click the OK button to save and close out of the Gentran:Server Configuration.
7. Stop and restart the Gentran:Server services.
B) Enable the Notification log on the Config panel setup and review the logging after applying a test.
- The final 2-3 rows in the log will indicate what SMTP commands were being issued and responded to. Remember that messages in 200 series are successful and 3oo series is failure/error messages.
- If the last command from Gentran was DATA and it was not responded with acknowledgment or success, it's likely the SMTP system is not prepared to accept DATA. Further conversation with SMTP administrator is necessary.
- Attempt to test with a different SMTP system for comparison. Select a public email SMTP site to prove it's not an SMTP Server issue with pushing a message.
C) Telnet connection to the SMTP server (attempt to use both a dns and IP examples)
