Problem
COGNOS Report shows blank fields for some specific rows, where there is a repeated data

shows blank fields for some specific rows, where there is a repeated
data
If the underlying query is run on the database, the result set does
show the data correctly.
It is only in the Impromptu report/ in the web
reports that this happens.
Also sometimes in a subsequent retrieve of
the same report, we see this data getting filled in.
Cause
Resolving The Problem
This problem can happen if there is a mismatch between the NLS_CHARACTERSET of
the server and the client.
The Client's CHARACTER SET needs to match that of
the Oracle db server.
I checked the clients's Prod and Test instances
and found that they have this set to UTF8
>select * from
nls_database_parameters where parameter like '%CHARACTERSET%'
I checked
my client
Start>Run>regedit
Then Navigate to
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\ORACLE\HOME0\NLS_LANG
You should see
something there like
AMERICAN_AMERICA.WE8ISO8859P1
Fisrt backup
(export) your registry
Then change this NLS_LANG setting to
AMERICAN_AMERICA.UTF8
Exit from Regedit, (this saves the new updated
registry)
Restart Impromptu, Or Impromptu WebReports
and rerun the
report. you will NOT see blanked out zip codes, they will appear
correctly.
There is no good solution for this in COGNOS's knowledge base
yet. It is a rare occurence.
