IBM Rational DOORS export to Microsoft Word result in error allocating sufficient memory for RTF string

Troubleshooting

Problem

Attempts to export data in IBM Rational DOORS to Microsoft Word when modules contain device independent bitmaps result in Error allocating sufficient memory for RTF string.

Symptom

A DOORS module containing images inserted using the Alt Print Screen does not successfully export to Microsoft Word.

Attempts to export results in the error:

Error allocating sufficient memory for RTF string

Cause

Insufficient machine resources prevent DOORS module export to Microsoft Word

Resolving The Problem

Device independent bitmaps can consume a large amount of memory for modules that contain a number of these images it is possible to exhaust the available memory before the export process completes successfully. Below are two suggestions to correct this problem:

  • The solution is to cut each device independent bitmap and paste it into an image editor then save it as a jpeg type or other editable image format. Reinsert the image into the Rational DOORS object as a OLE object (which consumes less resources).
  • Specify a save interval for the Microsoft Word document
  • 1. Click File -> Export . Microsoft Office -> Word

    2. Click the Advanced tab

    3. Check the box for Number of objects after which to save the Word document

    4. In the adjacent field specify a value for when to force a save in the document.

    Note: Decreasing the number (depending on the structure of your module) can help export the document without encountering the error.
