How to view lost history after applying a baseline

Question & Answer

Question

How can you view the history of an IBM Rational DOORS module after a baseline has been applied?

Cause

DOORS stores the history information for each module in a separate file; these files can become very large. Since DOORS opens the module's history file each time the module is opened, modules with very large history files will take longer to open. You can improve the module's performance by baselining it.

When you baseline a module, a new file is created for that baseline, including the history. This history is removed from the module's history file. Thus, the history will appear to be missing because it is now stored in a different file.

Answer

You can access the baseline history by opening the baseline and using the DOORS history commands.

To view the history associated with a baseline:

  1. Open the baseline (File > Baseline > View...)

  2. Select the baseline and click Open.
This opens a new window showing that baseline. The contents will be read-only.
You will now be able to access the history associated with this baseline using the usual DOORS history commands.

For example, to access an object's history, right-click on the object, select Properties, and view the History tab.

You can also do a side by side history comparison of two baselines in DOORS:
  1. Run the Baseline Compare command (File > Baseline > Compare...)

  2. Select the older of the baselines in the left side, and the newer baseline in the right side using the Baseline Compare window.

Selecting current in the right hand side allows you to compare an existing baseline to the current (unbaselined) state of the module.

  3. Click Compare to show the list of differences -- you'll get a window showing the number of differences found, followed by a window showing the list of differences (if any).

More information on comparing baselines is available in Using DOORS (Chapter 16: Using Baselines) and in the DOORS on-line help.
