Question & Answer
Question
When does DB2 generate a new log chain? What precautions do I need to take when manually managing log chains?
Answer
DB2 maintains log files under various log chains. A new log chain is created when either a database roll forward to point in time is performed or when a restore without rolling forward is performed. Log chains are specific to databases which have been enabled for log recovery where;
LOGRETAIN is set to RECOVERY
or
LOGARCHMETH1 set to LOGRETAIN/DISK/TSM/VENDOR
If you plan on manually archiving/moving log files between machines, for example log shipping between primary and standby servers, you may want to take extra caution to make sure that you are manually retrieving log files from the right log chain, especially for use during a roll forward operation. If you try to use a log file from a different log chain you may encounter an error indicating that DB2 is not able to find the right log file.
