Abstract

Ability to run integrated web services servers and integrated application servers in user-defined subsystems

You are in: IBM i Technology Updates > Welcome to IBM Integrated Web Services for i Technology Updates > Ability to run servers in user-defined subsystems

What is it?

You now have the ability to create or configure integrated web services servers and integrated application servers in user-defined subsystems.  Previously, when you created a server, the server always ran in the QHTTPSVR subsystem.
The Web Administration for i interface has been enhanced in two ways:
  1. When you create a server, you are given the option to override the default job description, job queue, and routing data that is used when submitting the server jobs, as is shown in the following figure when creating a web services server:

    Specify runtime attributes of server
  2. The server properties web page gives you the option to modify the default job description, job queue, and routing data that is used when submitting the server jobs for existing servers, and is shown in following figure:

    Server runtime properties
Note: In above figure, if you change server runtime environment and you have an associated HTTP Server, you should ensure that Synchronize with HTTP configuration is selected to ensure that the properties get propagated to the HTTP Server.

Why use it?

The subsystem is where work is processed on the system. A subsystem is a single, predefined operating environment through which the system coordinates the work flow and resource use. The system can contain several subsystems, all operating independently of each other. As the number of servers on the system increases, a single subsystem for a set of work is often insufficient. By dividing your servers into multiple subsystems you gain several advantages, including: (1) better control over what work is running in each subsystem; (2) improved scalability and availability by having a single subsystem do work for fewer servers; and (3) allowing for extra options for performance tuning.

Availability

The support is enabled in the following HTTP group PTFs:

SF99722 Level 21 V7R3M0
SF99662 Level 3    V7R4M0
