Dollar signs ($) at the end of the file extension

Troubleshooting

Problem

Customers often ask about the dollar signs on the end of file extensions in their data directory. The file with a $ at the end is a temporary file which is stored in memory while the server is running. These are temp versions of the .cub files and .dim files, and if the TM1 service is shut down gracefully the files with the dollar sign will be converted to the original files without a dollar sign.

Cause

If the server box crashes (and under certain other circumstances such as when a client is still logged in and working with the cube or dimension when the server is shutdown), sometimes the .cu$ or .di$ (or .cub$/.dim$ depending on version) file is stored in the data folder instead of the usual .cub/.dim file.

Resolving The Problem

If the TM1 server is brought back up, but a dimension or cube fails to load, look for the .cu$/.di$ file (or .cub$/.dim$ depending on version) in the data directory. Rename the file back to .cub or .dim, restart the server and the data should load.

If there are some of these files in the data folder, use your best judgment on whether or not they should be restored. If the same .dim/.cub file are in the data folder with a later time stamp than the corresponding .di$/.cu$ file, then it may not be advisable to restore them. Make sure to check data integrity if any files are changed from .di$/.cu$ files to .dim/cub.

Other TM1 objects (.sub/.vue/.rux, etc.) may also appear with the dollar signs, if so, use the same logic when deciding whether to restore those or not.
