Recently I came across an issue whereas any description value that contains special characters (-,_,$ etc) will be unable to search because Maximo standard API stores those characters in the CONTAINS function expression and will be processed as operators.
Following steps have been used to reproduce the issue:
1- Go to to any applications main tab and change the description to have special characters.
2- Go to the list tab and enter the exact description for that record. Press enter and it should fetch the modified record but it instead it displays no results.
Resolving the problem:
The following suggestion has been applied: Refer to the Oracle document:
http://docs.oracle.com/cd/B14117_01/text.101/b10730/cqspcl.htm
For special characters such as -, you will need to use \ instead so it is not treated as a special character.
For example, one asset's description is "word-of-mouth communication".
To search for it, enter this search term: word\-of\-mouth
