Infor and Lawson Solutions on IBM i

News

Abstract

IBM has a long-standing relationship with the development teams from Infor and Lawson who support many of the leading enterprise software solutions for the IBM i Power System platform (AS/400, System i, iSeries). Infor M3 (formerly Intentia Movex), Infor Lawson (also known as LSF or S3), Infor XA (formerly Mapics), Infor LX (formerly BPCS) and Infor Infinium are some of the major Infor solutions we work with. These solutions have a long history with the IBM i platform and today include the latest software and hardware technologies.

Infor and IBM have a strong alliance and partnership focused on our joint customers and providing our combined technologies to a diverse set of industries including manufacturing, distribution, healthcare, automotive, human resources, and many others. The IBM i development team maintains a close technical relationship with the Infor development team focused on optimization of the Infor solutions.

Infor Solutions and Java - There have been a number of emails and notices from Infor's strategy around Java and the standardization around Amazon's Corretto Java platform. This has caused some questions from IBM i customers using Infor products on what this means for them, and does this mean that Infor will not support IBM Java on IBM i, or whether Amazon's Corretto JVM will run on IBM i. For Infor customers running their Infor solutions on the IBM i platform -- nothing changes, the only Java JVM that runs on IBM i is the IBM Technology for Java JVM which is part of the IBM i platform. And that Java platform on IBM i is still the only supported Java platform for Infor solutions running on IBM i. The announcement from Infor is around a change in strategy for the Java platform on platforms where previously the Oracle Java JVM was being used and supported. Following Oracle's introduction of support charges for corporate customers using the Oracle Java platform, Infor is standardizing around Amazon's Corretto Java platform on those platforms (for example x86 servers or workstations). This is consistent with how IBM answered questions around Access Client Solutions (ACS) in terms of options other than Oracle Java on client workstations (see below).

IBM i 7.4 and Infor Solutions - Infor participated in IBM i 7.4 beta program which provided Infor early access to IBM i 7.4 code for testing. For certification and support for particular Infor solutions, users should contact Infor. Infor LX has largely completed their IBM i 7.4 testing and the following techdoc is now available: IBM i 7.4 Infor LX BPCS Technical Note

InPOWER 2019 - We encourage Infor XA, LX, System21, Enterprise Integrator users to attend inPOWER 2019 in Orlando, Florida.  IBM will be there with several presentations planned, as well as having the IBM alliance and development team available in the exhibition area to answer any questions you may have.

Java Changes in January 2019 and IBM ACS - You may be aware that starting in January 2019, Oracle will charge corporate customers for the use of the Oracle Java runtime. This has led to questions on what it means for IBM Access Client Solutions which runs on users client devices on top of Java. See the following techdoc to address some common questions: Java Options for IBM i Access Client Solutions

Inforum 2018 and IBM - IBM will be active and visible at the Inforum 2018 conference in Washington DC, in the exhibition space and with a presentation on the XA track around the IBM i roadmap.  Please be sure to stop by our booth and talk with our IBM i alliance team and add the following IBM i related session to your agenda: XA-105R - Roadmap: IBM i roadmap on Tuesday, Sep 25, 4:30 PM - 05:15 PM. The following link can be used to access IBM related presentations from Inforum as well as information on Power Systems, IBM i, AIX, and the IBM-Infor partnership: http://bit.ly/ibminforum2019

IBM POWER9 Systems Support for Infor Solutions - IBM launched the latest family of Power Systems, built on the industry leading POWER9 processor, in February 2018 with scale-out systems (S914, S924, S922) followed with the enterprise scale up systems in October, November 2018 (E980). Customers often ask about support for Infor solutions on POWER9 -- and the simple answer is they are fully supported!  Infor certification is based on IBM i OS releases, and with POWER9 supporting IBM i 7.2 and IBM i 7.3 there is a wide choice of support options for all the Infor solutions. Included in that Power System roadmap are the new IBM i Solution Edition offerings based on POWER9.

InPOWER 2017 - We encourage users to attend inPOWER 2017 in Chicago. IBM will be there with several presentations planned, as well as time in the exhibition area to answer any questions you may have. Use the following link to access all IBM presentations from the event: http://bit.ly/inPOWER2017IBM

Infor Certification for IBM i 7.3 - Infor development was part of the early testing program for IBM i 7.3 and current releases of Infor solutions should support IBM i 7.3. This includes the solutions for Infor M3, XA, LX, System/21 and Lawson LSF. Customers upgrading from older IBM i releases that are out of support (IBM i 7.1 or 6.1) are encouraged to move to IBM i 7.3.

Benchmarks and Performance

Infor M3

  • Infor M3 on IBM POWER7 and IBM i 7.1

This paper describes testing that was done with Infor M3 on the new IBM POWER7 750 and the IBM i 7.1 operating system. This report highlights the benefits of the latest IBM POWER hardware and IBM i OS. First it shows how runtime performance on the new POWER7 has improved over a similarly configured POWER6 system. Second it shows the runtime performance of IBM i 7.1 compared to IBM i 6.1.

  • Infor M3 on IBM Power 740 Express

This paper describes testing that was done with Infor M3 on the new IBM Power 740 Express and the IBM i OS. This report highlights the benefits of the latest low-end IBM POWER hardware and shows the enhanced scalability it can provide. First it shows how runtime performance the new POWER7 740 has improved over the previous POWER6 520 model. Second it shows scalability of the new IBM Power 740 with up to 6 processors. • Infor M3 7.1 Large User Scaling on System i

This paper describes testing that was done to test flexibility, integration, and scalability of the new Infor M3 7.1 running on a System i server. The test scenario was run using the i5/OS operating system, V5R4, and using the new IBM Technology for Java virtual machine, or IT4J, available in V5R4. All Infor M3 applications were installed on the same System i server. The test scenario was as follows: simulated users entered orders through M3 Workplace into M3 Business Engine, which includes full back-end processing to invoice the orders. The test team then ran the scenario using a System i model 570 system. Several different test scenarios were run to show the performance and scalability of Infor M3 7.1 running on a System i server.
