Problem
A NetServer drive can be mapped, but when the user attempts to access it an error message is returned. The message is "not accessible. An unexpected error occurred."
Symptom
A NetServer drive can be mapped, but when the user attempts to access it an error message is returned. The message is "not accessible. An unexpected error occurred."
Cause
This error can occur when the digital signing settings on the client and the NetServer are not compatible.
Diagnosing The Problem
For the NetServer, the Signing setting is configured in NetServer properties, on the Security tab. It is called 'Require clients to sign requests'. For maximum compatibility, it is recommended to set the NetServer to 'Optional'. Doing so will allow the corresponding setting in Windows to determine whether signing is required or not. When not using "Optional", a setting of "No" will only be compatible with Windows if signing is disabled on the Windows side and a setting of "Yes" will only be compatible with Windows if signing is enabled on the Windows side.
For the Windows client, the setting is in the "Local Security Policy". To view this, in Windows, run secpol.msc. This will open the "Local Security Policy". Expand "Local Policies" and "Security Options" then review "Microsoft Network Client" settings.

Resolving The Problem
"Microsoft Network Client: Digitally sign communications" set to Enabled is compatible with "Yes" on the NetServer properties.
"Microsoft Network Client: Digitally sign communications" set to Disabled is compatible with "No" on the NetServer properties.
Either value for "Microsoft Network Client: Digitally sign communications" will be compatible if NetServer properties are set to Optional.
