IBM Support

NED24 NVMe Expansion Drawer Feature Limitations

Question & Answer

Question

This document contains limitations related to the NED24 NVMe Expansion Drawer feature code ESR0 at the time of initial release with IBM Power FW1040.

Answer

FW1040 Required
At the time of general availability, FW1040 is required to support the NED24 NVMe Expansion Drawer.  FW1040 is a limited, interim release, and is different from IBM's normal releases in the following manner:
  1. Normal releases have service pack support for 2 years after the release.  However, FW1040 is only supported from GA until the next major FW version becomes available.
  2. Only a single service pack for FW1040 is planned near the release of the next major FW version.
  3. Clients who install FW1040 must perform a disruptive upgrade once the next major FW version becomes available.
  4. IBM manufacturing installs FW1040 for customer orders with NED24 NVMe Expansion Drawers included.  However, FW1030 is installed for customer orders without NED24 NVMe Expansion Drawers.
  5. IBM is not planning to release IBM i PTFs for FW1040.  Support will continue for the FW1030 stream ONLY until the next firmware release is published.
Only mode 1 supported
At the time of GA, only mode 1 is supported for the NED24 NVMe Expansion drawer.  In mode 1, the NVMe drives are configured as single-path devices with only 1 ESM controlling each device. No device failover capability is available.
Serviceable Events Incorrectly Logged
Certain serviceable events can be logged incorrectly, potentially leading to incorrect service actions.  Known scenarios follow.
  1. System Reference Code (SRC) B7006B01 is logged twice informationally when A/C power is lost.  No customer notification occurs with this SRC.  However, manage serviceable events report B7006B05 and B7006B07 to IBM.  In this case, it is likely that no hardware failure is present.  B7006B07 indicates a service procedure MEXIP09 for power fault isolation that must be performed.
  2. SRC B700BA01 can be logged indicating the enabling of a fault LED.  This SRC is logged with another SRC indicating the problem.  B700BA01 can be ignored.  Use the other SRC to analyze the problem.
  3. SRC B7006A88 can be logged with B7006A98 and B7006AA0.  This specific combination of SRCs can be ignored.  The indicated cable can be recovered by using a dummy replacement of the cable.  No hardware replacement is required.
  4. SRC B7006A99 can be logged indicating an alarm was detected within an Active Optical Cable (AOC).  If this SRC is logged with other SRCs, analyze those SRCs to find the cause of the problem.  If this SRC is logged alone, it can be ignored.
NVMe Migration Requires Slot Selection with Same Controller ID.
NVMe devices associate namespaces to a logical controller. Moving NVMe devices into an ESR0 expansion drawer or within the expansion drawer can cause the available controller ID to change making the original namespaces unavailable.  Customers moving supported features to a NED24 NVMe expansion drawer must choose a slot that uses the same controller ID as the original.
Both ESMs Require Connection
Both ESMs require a connection to the same server in order to be supported.
Concurrent Add Only Supported on 9080-HEX and 9143-MRX
NED24 NVMe expansion drawer can be added concurrently only on Power E1080 and Power E1050 servers.
