Manual LPAR creation

Question & Answer

Question

How to manually create a client LPAR and dynamically assign virtual adapters from the Enhanced+ UI?

Answer

This is the legacy method of creating LPARs (i.e. Alternative to Create Using Templates)

Select ‘All Systems’
Select the server
Click ‘Create Partition’ from the top right of the page

On the figure below, you will enter the ‘Partition Name’ and the partition ID will be assigned automatically as the next available.

You may select ‘Create using Templates’ but the example in this document is for the manual creation, for further info about templates you may follow the URLs below.

https://www.ibm.com/developerworks/community/wikis/home?lang=en_us#!/wiki/Power%20Systems/page/Creating%20Partition%20with%20Partition%20Templates%20in%20HMC

After creating the LPAR, it will be given the below resources by default:

Allocated Processing Units: 0.1
Allocated Virtual Processors: 1
Allocated Memory: 1 GB

Now, the LPAR has been created but it’s missing network and storage.

To assign a virtual ethernet adapter:

1- Select the newly created LPAR
2- Select ‘Virtual Networks’
3- Select ‘Manage Network Connections’

For more information about the dynamic assignments of the virtual ethernet adapter, please check the below URL:

For more information about creating ‘Virtual Network’ on the server level, check the below URL:

https://www.ibm.com/developerworks/community/wikis/home?lang=en_us#!/wiki/Power%20Systems/page/Virtual%20Network%20Management%20with%20HMC%20Enhanced%20UI

On the next window, select ‘Show and assign new virtual ethernet adapters’
Select the Virtual Network Name that you will be assigning the virtual ethernet adapter to.
If you would like to assign a specific server adapter slot ID, you may highlight ‘Next available’ then enter the number and hit enter.

You assign a virtual SCSI adapter to the new LPAR by selecting ‘Virtual Storage’ then ‘Virtual SCSI’ tab.
Click ‘Add Virtual SCSI Storage’.

Then you may assign a ‘Logical Volume’ from any VG other than rootVG .

You may click ‘Edit Connection’ if you would like to specify a server adapter slot ID by highlighting ‘Next Available’ and enter the number then hit enter.

Now the LPAR is ready for AIX installation.
