Location permission requirements on Android 10+ devices

Abstract

With the new permission changes in Android 10, users are required to turn on location service and grant location permission to MaaS360 app so the app can display configured SSID in Corporate Settings in MaaS360 agent and report last connected SSID to portal.
MaaS360 Kiosk app requires location permission to display configured Wi-Fi networks and Bluetooth devices in close range. The devices cannot discover Wi-Fi networks and Bluetooth devices until the location service is turned on.

Note:
  • Applicable to Android 10+ devices that are enrolled both in Device Admin and Android Enterprise.
  • If location permission is denied to MaaS360 agent, the Wi-Fi profile deployed from portal is configured on the device, but it does not show up in Corporate Settings.
  • If the permission is blocked due to policy, the user will not be able to turn on the service on the device. Administrators must ensure that the location detection is not disabled through the following policies:
    • MDM: Device Settings > Restrictions > Use GPS satellites for Location Detection
    • Android Enterprise: Restrictions > Allow Sharing of Locations
  • MaaS60 does not collect or use location information from the device and this behavior does not conflict with the Privacy Settings in MaaS360 portal.

MaaS360 portal changes

The following values are displayed against SSID field in MaaS360 portal > device > Network Information tab:

Privacy Settings Enabled

 When administrators are restricted from collecting location indicators through Privacy Settings.
Location Services Disabled When location service is disabled by the user on the device.
Location Permission Not Available When location permission is not granted by the user to MaaS360 agent.

If the location service is disabled or location permission is denied to MaaS360 agent, MaaS360 displays corresponding error message and hides configured SSID in Corporate Settings.

MaaS360 Kiosk app location requirements

MaaS360 Kiosk app requires location permission to display configured Wi-Fi networks and Bluetooth devices in close range. The devices cannot discover Wi-Fi networks and Bluetooth devices until the location service is turned on.

Note: Requires MaaS360 Kiosk app 7.0+.
