IBM Support

Lifting the dependency between the Spectrum Protect Backup-Archive Client and Spectrum Protect API

How To

Summary

There is no IBM Spectrum Protect Backup-Archive Client 8.1 or higher available anymore for the Solaris SPARC, the IBM Linux on Power® (Big Endian) or the 64-bit version of the HP-UX Itanium operating system. Only the IBM Spectrum Protect API version 7.1 is being delivered.
The IBM Spectrum Protect Backup-Archive Client and the IBM Spectrum Protect Data Protection applications have a dependency on the IBM Spectrum Protect API version. If you require the IBM Spectrum Protect Backup-Archive Client and an IBM Spectrum Protect Data Protection application on the same operating system this dependency allows you to install an IBM Spectrum Protect Data Protection application version 7.1 only.

Environment

This document applies when you are running the Solaris SPARC, the IBM Linux on Power® (Big Endian) or a 64-bit version of the HP-UX Itanium operating system requiring the IBM Spectrum Protect Backup-Archive Client version 7.1 and an IBM Spectrum Protect Data Protection application version 8.1 on the same operating system.

Steps

For the IBM Linux on Power® (Big Endian) or a 64-bit version of the HP-UX Itanium operating system, the procedure consists of the following three steps:
  1. Install the latest supported interim fix for the IBM Spectrum Protect Backup-Archive Client version 7.1
  2. Upgrade the IBM Spectrum Protect API to the latest available interim fix for version 8.1 using the "--nodeps" option
For example: rpm -Uvh TIVsm-API64.ppc64.rpm --nodeps
  3. Install the IBM Spectrum Protect Data Protection application version 8.1
The above procedures should only be used on this particular customer scenario.

For Solaris SPARC, the procedure is a bit more complex.
First, install the latest supported interim fix for the IBM Spectrum Protect Backup-Archive Client version 7.1 along with the IBM Spectrum Protect API prerequisite as relocatable installation to a different folder, for example: "/myRoot"
  1. pkgadd -R /myRoot -n -a ./tsmadmin -d ./gsk8cry64.pkg gsk8cry64
  2. pkgadd -R /myRoot -n -a ./tsmadmin -d ./gsk8ssl64.pkg gsk8ssl64
  3. pkgadd -R /myRoot -n -a ./tsmadmin -d ./TIVsmCapi.pkg TIVsmCapi
  4. pkgadd -R /myRoot -n -a ./tsmadmin -d ./TIVsmCba.pkg TIVsmCba
  5. copy the files "/usr/bin/dsm.opt" and  "/usr/bin/dsm.sys"  to "/myRoot/usr/bin" and use the "/myRoot/usr/bin/dsm*" commands to invoke the IBM Spectrum Protect Backup-Archive Client commands
Second, install the  IBM Spectrum Protect Data Protection version 8.1 version using the officially documented commands and the default target locations.
Please note that relocatable installations are officially supported only for remote installation purposes and no extended test are performed, but it is tolerated if it can help on this particular scenario only.
