Abstract
If Kdump is configured to copy crash dumps to a remote location over a VNIC adapter, dump capture may fail as a result of carrier loss and device failover operations during device driver probe.
Content
Linux Releases Affected
SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 12 Service Pack 3
SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 12 Service Pack 4
SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 15
IBM Systems Affected
All POWER 9 systems
Symptoms
When attempting to boot the kdump kernel, VNIC device failovers may occur during device driver probe, which can occasionally result in device failure. As a result, transmission of the core dump to a remote network target will also fail. This is the result of a communication failure and incomplete handling of the previous running session prior to the crash.
Workaround
Workaround is to dump to an alternate device, such as local disk, SAN disk, or transmit over a virtual ethernet adapter.
Fix Outlook
IBM is working closely with SuSE to release a fix for this issue. The fix should come as part of a future SLES maintenance release. Please open a support ticket with SUSE if a hotfix is needed prior to the next SUSE maintenance release.
