Installing Rational ClearCase/ClearQuest 7.1.2 with License Key Administrator fails 8.1.1 with NullPointerException error

Problem

Attempts to install IBM Rational ClearCase/Rational ClearQuest V7.1.2 install package and Rational License Key Administrator V8.1.1 at same time fails with the error ' java.lang.NullPointerException ' in the IBM Installation Manager.

Symptom

Scenario to encounter the issue :

  1. Download the multilingual installation package of IBM Rational ClearCase or ClearQuest version 7.1.2 for Microsoft Window from IBM Passport Advantage.

  2. Unzip the file RATL_ClearQuest_7.1.2_WIN.zip or RATL_ClearCase_7.1.2_WIN.zip.

  3. Double click launchpad.exe to select Install the IBM Rational ClearCase or ClearQuest.

  4. Select these install packages:

    IBM Installation Manager 1.4.1
    IBM Rational ClearCase (or ClearQuest) - Windows 7.1.2.00
    IBM Rational License Key Administrator 8.1.1



  5. Installation fails with this error:

    An error occurs during the step of configuring after installation : java.lang.NullPointerException



  6. Rational ClearCase or ClearQuest is installed, but Installation Manager and License Key Administrator are not installed.

Cause

The error occurs if you attempt to install ClearCase 7.1.2 or ClearQuest 7.1.2 at the same time with Rational License Key Administrator 8.1.1. This issue is identified as a product defect in the Rational License Key Administrator 8.1.1 install package under APAR PM26830.

Environment

This problem occurs on Windows platforms with non-English language locale such as Japanese, Korean, Chinese, French, or other non-English languages.

Diagnosing The Problem

The Language for non-Unicode programs can be verified in the in the Windows Control Panel, under Regional and Language Options > Advanced tab.

Resolving The Problem

The defect APAR PM26830 has been fixed in IBM Rational License Key Administrator version 8.1.2.

The install package IBM Rational License Key Administrator V8.1.2 for Windows Multilingual (CI265ML) is available on IBM Passport Advantage.
The install package IBM Rational License Key Administrator V8.1.2 is also the part of the Rational ClearCase and Rational ClearQuest V8.0 install package and the launchpad.exe is no longer having this issue.

SOLUTION:

It is recommended to use the License Key Administrator V8.1.2 install package to avoid encountering this issue when you install the Rational ClearCase or Rational ClearQuest v7.1.2 at the same time.

  1. Download the Installation Manager 1.4.3 or later and install.
  2. Download the install package ' IBM Rational License Key Administrator V8.1.2 for Windows Multilingual (CI265ML) ' from IBM Passport Advantage.
  3. Download the installation package of IBM Rational ClearCase or ClearQuest V71.2 from IBM Passport Advantage.
  4. (Optional) Download the latest Fix Pack of IBM Rational ClearCase or ClearQuest V71.2 from the technote 1306624.
  5. Launch the Installation Manager.
  6. Add a repository for Rational License Key Administrator V8.1.2 install package.
  7. Add a repository for Rational ClearCase V7.1.2 or ClearQuest V7.1.2 install package.
  8. (Optional) Add a repository for a Fix Pack for Rational ClearCase V7.1.2 or ClearQuest V7.1.2 install package.
  9. Select the both product packages to install..

WORKAROUND FOR EXISTING INSTALLATIONS:

If you have already had the above error, you only need to re-try to install the Installation Manager and Rational License Key Administrator.

  1. Double click launchpad.exe again to select Install the IBM Rational ClearCase or ClearQuest.

  2. Select only the below install packages:

    IBM Installation Manager 1.4.1
    IBM Rational License Key Administrator 8.1.1




  3. Complete to install.

WORKAROUND FOR NEW INSTALLATIONS:

Install the ClearCase or ClearQuest products separately from License Key Administrator.


  1. Extract the install package RATL_ClearQuest_7.1.2_Win.zip or RATL_ClearCase_7.1.2_Win.zip.

  2. Double click the launchpad.exe in the disk1 directory from where you extracted the zip file.

  3. Click Install IBM Rational ClearQuest in the launch pad menu.

  4. Select the only IBM Installation Manger version 1.4.1 and IBM Rational License Key Administrator version 8.1.1 for installation package in Installation Manager Wizard.

    Note: You should unselect IBM Rational ClearQuest Windows version 7.1.2.00.



  5. Click Install to complete installation.

  6. Launch IBM Installation Manger.

  7. Add the repository from where you extracted the zip file. For example, click Menu > File > Preferences. Click the Add repository button. Add the repository, for example C:\RATL_ClearQuest_7.1.2_Win\disk1\diskTag.inf.

  8. Click Install in the Installation Manger Wizard.

  9. Select the product package IBM Rational ClearQuest Windows version 7.1.2.00 as the installation package in Installation Manger Wizard.

  10. Click Install to complete installation.
