Supported system: IBM® BladeCenter® HC 10 Type 7996 and Type 7997

Follow the instructions in this document in sequential order unless these instructions advise you otherwise. Windows and messages might differ from those in this document. Throughout this document, the term select is used to denote the use of arrow keys, the Tab key, or Alt + a letter combination to make a selection from a menu.

1.0 What you will need

You must have the following software and hardware for the installation:

  • For installation - A licensed copy of Microsoft® Windows® Vista x64 Edition.
  • For installation - Depending on the BladeCenter chassis type, an external DVD reader might be required
  • Supported hard disk drives. Go to http://www-03.ibm.com/servers/eserver/serverproven/compat/us/ for the list of supported options and part numbers for the blade server.

3.0 Installation instructions for Microsoft Windows Vista x64 Edition

Use one of the following two procedures to install Microsoft Vista x64 Editions.

3.1 Pre-installed software recovery

If the IBM BladeCenter HC10 server came preloaded with the Microsoft Vista x64 Edition operating system, see the Problem Determination and Service Guide that comes with your system. In the Diagnostics section, see "Recovering the operating system and pre-installed software", follow the step-by-step process to recover your operating system.

3.2 Instructions for manual software installation

To install Microsoft Windows Vista Edition, complete the following steps:

  1. Place the blade server into a BladeCenter chassis.
  2. Depending on the type of BladeCenter chassis used, an external DVD might need to be attached.
  3. Turn on the blade server and insert the Windows Vista Setup DVD into the DVD drive. When you are prompted with the message press any key to boot from cd, or DVD press any key. Setup copies the files from the setup CD. This process takes several minutes.
  4. When the Vista screen is displayed, select the following options:
    1. Language to install: English
    2. Time and currency format: English (United States)
    3. Keyboard or input method: US
  5. Press Next.
  6. Click on Install Now.
  7. When you are prompted for the Windows Vista product key, type your product key.
    1. Check Automatically activate Windows when I'm online
    2. Select Next.
    3. Scroll the bar down to read the license agreement, and then check I accept the license terms.
    4. Select Next.
  8. Click on Custom (advanced).
  9. When Windows Vista Setup displays all the hard disk storage that is available on the blade server, select one of the following options to choose or create a drive partition in which to install Windows Vista:
    • Allow Setup to create a partition: To partition the entire hard disk as one primary partition, highlight Disk0 unallocated space for the hard disk drive on which you want to install Windows Vista and press Next.
    • Create a partition: To create a partition, highlight Disk0 unallocated space for the hard disk drive on which you want to install Windows Vista, click on Drive options (advanced) and press New. You are prompted to indicate how much available space to allocate from the nonpartitioned drive. Type the amount of space (in MB) and press Apply and then press Next.
    • Delete a partition.
    Note:
    When the Installing Windows message is displayed, Setup is copying the applicable files to the drive partition. This process takes several minutes.
  10. In the Set Up window, when you are prompted for your name and password, type your name and password, and then select Next.
  11. Type a computer name and choose a desktop background. Select Next.
  12. When the message Help protect Windows Automatically is displayed, select one of the following options:
    • Use recommended settings (Default)
    • Install important updates only
    • Ask me later
  13. In the Time Zone window, set the current time. To change the date, select the date on the calendar. To change the time, highlight the value that you want to change and enter the new values using the keyboard or the Up Arrow and Down Arrow keys, and then select Next
    Note:
    Windows Vista services perform many tasks that are dependent on the accuracy of the time and date settings of the computer. Be sure to select the correct time zone for the computer location to avoid problems.
  14. Select your computer and current location from one of the following:
    • Home
    • Work
    • Public location
  15. When the Thank You window appears, click Start.
  16. Type the workgroup or domain name in the applicable field.

    The remaining operating-system components are installed and configured according to the options that you specified. The display in the left column is the amount of time remaining until the Windows Vista installation is completed. This process might take several minutes. When the installation is complete, the server restarts automatically.

  17. After Windows Vista starts, type the administrator password to log on.
4.0 Post-installation instructions: Installing and updating device drivers

Use the procedures in the following sections to install the device drivers and resolve any unknown device. To open Device Manager, complete the following steps:

  1. Select Start.
  2. Right-click Computer.
  3. Click Manage, click Continue; then, select Device Manager in the left pane.
4.1 Installing the Intel Chipset driver

To install the Intel chipset drivers for the system board, complete the following steps:

  1. Go to MIGR-4JTS2T.
  2. Select the link for BladeCenter matrices; then, select BladeCenter HC10 (7996, 7997).
  3. To download the Intel® Chipset Software Installation Utility, use one of the following procedures:
    • Click Open to run the file from its location on the IBM Web site (preferred).
    • Transfer the file to a local drive, and double-click the executable (.exe) file to run it.
  4. In the Welcome window, click Next.
  5. In the License Agreement window, read the agreement, and click Yes to agree.
  6. At the Readme information, click Next.
  7. After the device drivers are installed, click Finish.
  8. Best practice is to reboot the system after a chipset installation.
4.2 Installing the Broadcom Nic drivers for Vista

To install the Broadcom NetXtreme Gigabit Ethernet device driver, complete the following steps:

  1. Go to MIGR-4JTS2T.
  2. Select the link for BladeCenter matrices; then, select BladeCenter HC10 (7996, 7997).
  3. Select the file links to download the Broadcom NetXtreme Ethernet device driver. This takes a few minutes.
  4. Double-click the device driver package, an executable (.exe) file that will open an extraction program.
  5. In the Welcome window, click Next.
  6. In the License Agreement window, read the agreement, and click Accept to agree.
  7. Type c:\drivers\nic for the folder where the files are to be saved, and click Finish. Later, you will need to point to this location when installing device drivers.
  8. Click Yes to create the folder.
  9. When the message The package has been delivered successfully is displayed, click OK.
  10. Navigate back to the install directory selected and either run Setup.exe or the Launch icon as appropriate to install drivers.
  11. Refer to the readme file in the installation directory for specific instructions or specialized installations.
  12. After Windows installs the device drivers, click Finish.

To configure the network, click in sequential order: Start -> Settings -> Control Panel -> Network Connections, and then select New Connection Wizard to set up the network connection.

To configure network protocols, right-click Local Area Connection, and then click Properties in the main window.

To join a domain, click Start -> Settings -> Control Panel -> System, click the Computer Name tab, and then click Change.

4.3 Installing the ISO IPMI drivers and mapping layer (systems management)

The BladeCenter HC10 Type 7996 and 7997 server requires the use of the ISO IPMI drivers with IBM Director for systems management.

  1. Go to MIGR-4JTS2T.
  2. Select the link for BladeCenter matrices; then, select BladeCenter HC10 (7996, 7997).
  3. Select the file links to download the ISO IPMI device driver and the corresponding map layer that is dependant on 32-bit or 64-bit OS type.
  4. The correct sequencing for the install is to load the IPMI device driver first, followed by the mapping layer that reflects your installed OS.
  5. Refer to the readme file accompanying the driver and the mapping layer for specific installation instructions.
4.4 Installing video drivers

The BladeCenter HC10 Type 7996 and 7997 server supports multiple video device types. Complete the following steps to reference installation instructions for drivers on the specific video card installed.

  1. Go to MIGR-4JTS2T.
  2. Select the link for BladeCenter matrices; then, select BladeCenter HC10 (7996, 7997).
  3. Select the file links to download the specific video device driver for the video adapter installed.
  4. Refer to the readme file accompanying the device driver for specific installation instructions.
4.5 HD audio device information

The BladeCenter HC10 (Type 7996 and 7997) server ships with the audio capability disabled on the UIDC component of the blade server. Refer to the installation documentation that ships with the blade server for instructions on how to enable this function. No special drivers are required for use with Windows Vista.
