Follow the network operating system (NOS) installation instructions provided in this document in sequential order unless these instructions advise you otherwise. Windows and messages might differ from those in this document. Throughout this document, the term select is used to denote the use of arrow keys, the tab key, or Alt + a letter combination to make a selection from a menu. The term click is used to denote the use of a mouse to make a selection.

1.0 What you will need

You must have the following software and hardware for the installation:

  • A licensed copy of Microsoft(R) Windows(R) Server 2003.
  • Supported hard disk drives. Go to http://www-03.ibm.com/servers/eserver/serverproven/compat/us/ for the ServerProven(R) list of supported options and part numbers for the server.
  • If you are using the IBM ServeRAID options, you need the IBM ServeRAID 7.10b (or later) Support CD.
  • A CD drive.
2.0 Where to download device drivers and files

Notes:

  • Take precautions when moving an IBM eServer xSeries server. See the installation guide for more information.
  • Do not remove the cover while operating an IBM eServer xSeries server to be sure the internal components are cooled properly.
  • Components can be installed after you complete the Windows Server 2003 installation process.

Complete the following steps to install Windows Server 2003:

  1. Turn on the server. Insert the Windows Server 2003 Setup CD into the CD drive; then, restart server.

    Note: When the server restarts, you might be prompted with the message "Press any key to boot from cd". Press any key to restart the server from the Windows Server 2003 Setup CD.

  2. The Windows Server 2003 Setup window opens. Setup will take a few minutes to load. When you are prompted to install Windows Server 2003, press Enter.
  3. When the licensing agreement is displayed, read the licensing agreement, press Page Down to scroll to the bottom of the screen, and press F8 to select I Agree.
  4. Setup displays all hard disk storage that is available on the server. Use one of the following options to choose or create a drive partition in which to install Windows Server 2003:
    • Allow setup to create a partition: To partition the entire disk as one primary partition, highlight non-partitioned space on the hard disk drive and press Enter.
    • Create a Partition: To create a partition, highlight the non-partitioned space on the hard drive. Press the C key; you will be prompted to indicate how much available space to allocate from the nonpartitioned drive. Type the amount of space (in megabytes) and press Enter.
    • Delete a Partition.
  5. After you select a drive to partition, you are prompted to choose a file system. Select the NTFS file system.

    Notes:
    • Setup will format the selected partition and copy the appropriate files to the drive partition. This process will take several minutes.
    • The server restarts to the graphical portion of setup where setup will continue with the installation of Windows Server 2003. During this process, setup will automatically install and configure devices in the server. This process will take several minutes.

  6. The Regional Settings will default to US settings. Make changes if you do not install the server in the US Click Next to continue.

    Note: To modify the regional settings after installing Windows Server 2003, click Control Panel, then click Regional Options.

  7. The Personalize Your Software window opens. When you are prompted for your name and organization, type your name in the Name field and type your organization in the Organization field. The names you type are used as default server names. Applications that you install on the server at a later time will use this information for the product Registration and document identification. Click Next to continue.
  8. When you are prompted for the Windows Server 2003 Setup CD-Key, type the Windows Server 2003 Setup CD-Key in the appropriate fields. Click Next to continue.
  9. In the Licensing Modes window, select the appropriate licensing mode for your organization. Click Next to continue.
  10. In the server Name and Administrator Password window, you will be prompted for an administrator password and server name. (Notice that Setup uses the organization name, entered earlier, as a suggested name for the server.) Type the server name and password. Click Next to continue.

    Note: Passwords are case sensitive. Be sure to use a combination of upper and lower case letters with at least one number for your password.

  11. In the Time Zone window, set the current time for Windows Server 2003. To change the date, click the button to the right of the date. To change the time, highlight the value you want to change and enter the correct values using the keyboard or the up and down arrow keys. Click Next to continue.

    Note: Windows Server 2003 services perform many tasks that are dependent on the accuracy of the time and date settings of the server. Be sure to select the correct time zone for the server location to avoid problems.

  12. In the Networking Settings window, select Typical or Custom settings. If you are prompted, type the appropriate network information. Click Next to install Windows networking components.

    Note: If the network card is not functioning (expected for the xSeries server), you will not be prompted for network information. You can set up the network from Windows after installation.

  13. In the Workgroup or Computer Domain window, select one of the following options:
    • No, this computer is not on a network, it is a network without a domain.
    • Yes, make this computer a member of the following domain.
    Type the workgroup or domain name in the appropriate fields. Click Next to continue.

    Setup installs and configures the remaining operating system components according to the options you specified. The display in the left hand column is the amount of time remaining until the Windows Server 2003 installation is completed. This process might take several minutes.
  14. Remove the Windows Server 2003 Setup CD from the CD drive and click Finish. Windows Server 2003 restarts and runs the newly installed version of Windows Server 2003.
  15. After the Windows Server 2003 program starts, press Ctrl+Alt+Delete to log on. When the desktop is displayed, Windows Server 2003 configures the server wizard. The server wizard assists in the set up of the additional Windows Server 2003 components that you selected during the installation process.
4.0 Post installation instructions: Installing and updating device drivers

The procedures in the following sections will load the device drivers necessary to finish setting up the server. Each of the following sections requires that Device Manager is open. To open the Device Manager, on the desktop, click Start, right-click My Computer, click Manage, then select Device Manager in the left pane to identify hardware that is not functioning (indicated by a yellow exclamation mark usually listed under "Other Devices").

These instructions assume you are able to access the IBM Web site and download the necessary files from Software and device drivers - IBM eServer xSeries 336.

4.1 Installing the Broadcom NetXtreme Gigabit Ethernet device driver

To install the network controller device drivers, complete the following steps:

  1. Go to Software and device drivers - IBM eServer xSeries 336. Download the Broadcom NetXtreme Ethernet device drivers and transfer this file to a local drive. To run the downloaded executable, double-click the .exe file, which will extract the files onto the local hard disk.
  2. In the Welcome window, click Next.
  3. In the License Agreement window, select Accept to agree to the License Agreement.
  4. Type c:\drivers\nic for the folder where the files are to be saved. Later, you will need to point to this location when installing the device drivers. Click Finish.
  5. Click Yes to create the folder.
  6. When the message "The package has been delivered successfully" is displayed, click OK.
  7. On the desktop, open Device Manager, right-click the Ethernet Controller, click Properties, then click Reinstall Driver.
  8. In the Welcome to the Hardware wizard window, click Install from a list or specific location (Advanced), then click Next.
  9. In the next window, select Search for the best driver in these locations. Clear the first check box, and select the check box labeled Include this location in the search. Click Browse.
  10. When prompted for the file location, navigate to c:\drivers\nic and click OK. Click Next to begin searching for the new device drivers.
  11. After Windows installs the device drivers, click Finish.
  12. Close the Properties window.
  13. On the desktop, open Device Manager, right-click the remaining Ethernet Controller, click Properties, then click Reinstall Driver.
  14. In the Welcome to the Hardware Update wizard window, click Install from a list or specific location (Advanced), then click Next.
  15. In the next window, select Search for the best driver in these locations. Clear both check boxes, then click Next to search for the new device drivers.
  16. After Windows installs the device drivers, click Finish.
  17. Close the Properties window.

To configure the network, click in sequential order: Start, Settings, Control Panel, Network Connections, then select New Connection Wizard to set up the network connection. To configure network protocols, right-click Local Area Connection, then click Properties in the main window. To join a domain, click Start, Control Panel, System, and thenclick the Computer Name tab, then click Change.

4.2 Installing IBM system board device drivers

To install the IBM system board device drivers, complete the following steps:

  1. Go to Software and device drivers - IBM eServer xSeries 336. Select the Intel(TM) Chipset Software Installation Utility; then, either:
    • Click Open to run the file from its location on the IBM Web site (preferred).
    • Transfer the file to a local drive, then double-click the .exe file to run it.
  2. In the Welcome window, click Next.
  3. In the License Agreement window, select Accept to agree to the License Agreement.
  4. Click Next at the Readme Information.
  5. After the device drivers are loaded, click Finish (restarts the server).
