1.0 What you will need

• A flat-blade screwdriver (to install hard disk drives)
• Supported hard disk drives (Click here to view a list of the supported options and part numbers for your server.)
• A licensed copy of the Microsoft Windows NT Server 4.0 (If you plan to install it by using a copy of the CD instead of an original, you will have to install it by using diskettes. Copies, unless built on special CD-ROM writable drives, are not startable (bootable.)
• An Ethernet Suport Diskette (This diskette can be downloaded from the file transfer protocol (FTP) site. See the next section for more information.)
• For the PC ServeRAID II adapter, you will need the following diskettes:
  • A PC ServeRAID Device Driver and Utilities Diskette, version 2.40 (part number 10L9201) or later
  • A PC ServeRAID Configuration Diskette, version 2.40 (part number 10L9198) or later
  • If the PC ServeRAID II Adapter BIOS is not version 2.40 (or later), you will need an IBM ServeRAID II BIOS Firmware Diskette, version 2.40 (part number 10L9218) or later (This diskette image is included in Diskette Factory on the ServerGuide 4.0.2 (or later.))
• Windows NT 4.00 Device Drivers for S3 TRIO 64V+ Diskette v1.01.01 (part number 4307001) (This diskette is also shipped with the server.)
• One blank diskette to create an Emergency Repair Diskette (Label it "Emergency Repair Diskette".)
• One blank diskette for each of the above device driver diskettes that you use for your particular installation process.
• Windows NT Server 4.0 Service Pack 3 (file name NT4SP3_I.EXE) (This service pack 3 is available from the Microsoft Windows Web site or FTP site. See the next section for more information.)

If you are very familiar with SCSI, hardware, and the installation process, continue with "3.0 Quick installation instructions for experienced users". If you are not, continue with "4.0 Detailed installation instructions".

3.0 Quick installation instructions for experienced users

1. Check the voltage switch where applicable. (Some models are auto-sensing.)
2. Insert the original "Windows NT Server 4.0 CD" into the drive and power on the server. The server will automatically start (boot) by using the original CD-ROM, but it will not start by using copies of the original. If the server does not start, verify that the bootable CD-ROM option is set up in the ServeRAID Configuration Utility.
3. Press F6 when the message "Setup is inspecting your computer's hardware configuration" appears. Install the "IBM PC ServeRAID driver" from the IBM PC ServeRAID Drivers and Utilities Diskette.
4. Use the Ethernet drivers that are shipped with the server for the on-board Ethernet 100/10 controller. Use the Ethernet Support Diskette. The path to the driver is A:\winnt351.

NOTE: At the "AMD PCNET PCI Ethernet Adapter v3.10i" screen, select Continue. Do not make any selections in this window. Simply accept the defaults and continue. When you install the Windows NT 4.0 Server from the Windows NT CD, the AMDPCN.SYS driver is usually loaded by default for the onboard AMD Ethernet card. This process occurs if you do not use the Serverguide software to install the operating system. Click here to access the IBM 10/100 Ethernet Controller Driver Diskette to download the PCNTN4PS.SYS file.

5. Do not install any video mode except VGA during the initial installation process.
6. If you install primary and secondary microprocessors in your server, install both microprocessors at this time.

NOTE: If you install the secondary microprocessor after you install Windows NT Server 4.0, you must reinstall the operating system.

7. Install the Microsoft Windows NT Service Pack 3. See "Appendix A".
8. Install the S3 Trio 64V+ Video Drivers. See "Appendix B".

4.0 Detailed installation instructions
This section provides complete instructions for the Windows NT Server 4.0 installation process.

4.1 Setting up the hardware for NOS installation

1. If your model is shipped with a voltage switch next to the power supply at the back of the server, please verify that it is set to the appropriate voltage for your location. If there is no voltage switch next to the power supply, your server has an auto-sensing voltage system.
2. Remove the power cord from the power supply.
3. Looking at the server from the rear, loosen the 3 thumbscrews on the right side of the server and remove the side access panel.
4. For the initial installation, you must install all the microprocessors that you plan to use and it is recommended that you should remove all other adapters and devices that are not required to get the base operating system installed. For example, if you plan to install multiple network adapters, only install one at this time. If you plan to use a tape drive or external SCSI devices, just disconnect them temporarily. After the operating system is starting (booting) without errors, add these devices one at a time. This procedure simplifies the installation process.

NOTE: If you plan to use an external DASD enclosure, the following instructions will not apply. Refer to the documentation provided with the external enclosure for proper setup, then proceed to Section "4.2 Setting up the BIOS".

5. Verify that the SCSI cable (part number 76H3452) runs from the on-board RAID controller to the top of the hot-swap backplane, and that there is a second SCSI cable (part number 76H3454) running from the bottom of the hot-swap backplane to the CD-ROM.
6. Install the desired number of hot-swap hard disk drives into the hot-swap bays, begin with the top bay and proceed downward.
7. Verify that the SCSI cable (part number 60H9316) runs from either the on-board RAID controller or the ServeRAID adapter to the CD-ROM. After all drives have been installed, close the cover and plug in the power cable.

4.2 Setting up the BIOS

1. Power on the server and when you are prompted on the screen, press F1 to enter Configuration/Diagnostics.
2. Press Enter to select Configuration/Setup Utility.
3. Go to the Load Default Settings selection and press Enter twice.
4. Select Date and Time and verify the settings and press Esc to return to the "Main Menu".
5. If you use the on-board RAID controller to start up, you will need to select Start Options and verify that the "first startup device" is set to Diskette Drive 0, and the "second startup device" is set to Hard Disk or Hard Disk 0. If Hard Disk or Hard Disk 0 do not appear in the window, then the on-board RAID controller does not recognize your hard disk drives. Go back to the "Setting up the hardware" section to verify that the SCSI drive is configured properly. After the SCSI drive is configured, press Esc to return to the "Main Menu".

NOTE: If you use a startable CD-ROM, the system will auto-detect the CD-ROM when it is placed in the drive and the server is started. If you do not have the startable CD-ROM in the server when the server is started, the server will not recognize the CD-ROM and will use the startup (boot) order you have set in step 5.

6. If any ISA devices are installed (or will be installed) that need IRQs (or other system resources such as I/O ports or memory) reserved, choose Plug and Play and then choose the desired resource type you wish to reserve. Change the desired resource from "Plug and Play" to ISA Legacy. From the "Plug and Play" window, press Esc twice, move to Save Settings, and press Enter twice. Move to Exit Setup and press Enter.
7. Press Esc and then press Enter to select Yes, exit the Setup Utility.
8. The server will restart. If you see the "Virus Warning" message, select Change is expected. If you receive a "162 Configuration Change has Occurred" message during POST, press Enter to select Continue, and press Enter again.
9. At the "Diagnostic/Setup Utility" window, press Esc, press Enter to select Yes, save and exit the Setup Utility.
10. If you see an error message "I9990305", it means you do not have an operating system installed.

4.3 Configuring arrays using the PC ServeRAID II adapter

1. Insert the ServeRAID Configuration Diskette, version 2.40 in the diskette drive and restart the server.
2. Upon initial startup, an error message that is similar to the following message might be encountered "Following drives not responding (oldstate:newstate:ch:bay) (ONL:DDD:2:1)(ONL:DDD:2:2) Your server has a configuration error due to above condition(s)". Press F5 - Update adapter configuration to exclude the non-responding drives.

Warning: The non-responding drives will be set to DDD, DHS, or EMP state. Press F5 to accept any configuration changes that might occur. The drives will be set up later in this section to match your configuration.

3. After initializing, exit to the "Main Menu" and select Create/Delete/Copy Log Drive.
4. Select Create Disk Array.
5. Press the arrow keys to select RDY drives for each new array. Press Enter on each highlighted drive to add it to the array.
6. Press Esc when you have finished selecting drives.
7. Select Define Logical Drive.
8. Select an array on which to define a logical drive.
9. Specify the RAID level for the new logical drive.
10. Specify the size for the new logical drive, and confirm with a Yes.
11. A message stating that "All logical drives must be initialized after being created" will appear. Press Enter. Confirm the command to initialize the new logical drive with a Yes. If a RAID-5 logical drive was defined, a message stating that "All RAID-5 logical drives must be synchronized after the initialization process" will appear. Confirm the synchronization process of the new logical drive with a Yes. The synchronization process might take several hours to complete per logical drive.
12. After the synchronization process, press Esc to the "Main Menu". Choose Advanced Functions and then backup IPS ServeRAID Config.
13. Verify that the "PC ServeRAID Configuration Diskette", version 2.40 diskette is not write-protected.
14. Type the name of the file to which you wish to save the Config, or press Enter to accept the default. Press Yes to confirm.
15. Exit the utility and ignore the message to back up the RAID configuration. Confirm with a Yes again.

4.4 Running the Windows NT Server 4.0 installation program using the ServeRAID II adapter

1. Restart the server and press Ctrl+I when you are prompted.
2. Select Advanced Functions.
3. Select Boot CD-ROM and INT13 Extensions.
4. Set the "BIOS Support" for the bootable CD-ROM to Yes by pressing Enter.
5. Select Save configuration in Adapter.
6. Select Exit twice to exit the utility.
7. Insert the "Windows NT 4.0 CD-ROM" into the CD-ROM drive and restart your server.
8. Press F6 when the message "Setup is inspecting your computers hardware configuration" appears.
9. Select S to specify the additional device, and then highlight Other and press Enter.
10. Insert the ServeRAID Device Driver and Utilities Diskette into the diskette drive and press Enter twice to accept IBM PC ServeRAID.
11. If you have added additional Disk controllers, press S and follow the previous instructions for installing additional drivers, or press Enter twice and select C to continue the installation process. You might receive the message that "Setup has determined that one or more of your hard disks has more than 1024 cylinders". Press Enter to continue. Both the Adaptec 2940U/W and the PC ServeRAID II utilize extended DOS translation to accommodate this configuration.
12. You might receive the message that "Setup has determined that your computers startup hard disk is new or has been erased". Press C to continue setup.
13. Page down through the licensing agreement and press F8 if you agree with the license agreement.
14. Press Enter at the "No changes: the above list matches my computer" panel.
15. Press C to create a partition, then type its size and press Enter. Press Enter again to install to the specified partition. The partition size should range between 300MB and no greater than 2000 MB for FAT partitions, and 300 MB and no greater than 4000 MB for NTFS partitions. It is recommended that the partition be at least 1000 MB if you plan to install the full BackOffice Suite on the installation partition.
16. Select FAT or NTFS file system and press Enter to format the installation partition.
17. Specify an installation directory and press Enter. (The default is C:\WINNT.)
18. Press Enter to allow "Setup" to check your hard disk drive, or press Esc to skip the examination.
19. Setup then copies the operating system files to the directory that you specified in step 17. Remove any diskettes and the "Windows NT Server CD-ROM" from the drive when you are prompted and press Enter to restart the server.
20. You might receive a "Virus Warning" message on restart; this message is normal. Select Change is expected. The system might run CHKDSK and restart a second time if NTFS has been selected as the file system type.
21. Select Next at the "Windows NT Setup" screen.

NOTE: In the following steps, you may either press Enter or select Next. When the "Next" button is highlighted, if you press Enter, it activates that button.

22. Insert the "Windows NT CD-ROM" when you are prompted and select OK.
23. Select the default directory and select OK and select Next or press Enter.
24. Type your name and organization and select Next.
25. Type your CD Key located on the back of the CD jewel box and select Next.
26. Type your number of users Per Server or select Per Seat and select Next.
27. Type your computer name and select Next.

NOTE: The only way to change Server Type is to repeat this installation process. So, select carefully. Server types include the following controllers:

• Primary Domain Controller (PDC) (This server tracks changes that are made to the accounts of all computers on the network. Only one PDC is necessary per domain.)
• Backup Domain Controller (BDC) (This server acts as a backup to the PDC. Multiple BDCs are allowed per domain.)
• Stand Alone Server (This server serves as neither a PDC or BDC.)

28. Select the Server Type and select Next.
29. Type the administrator account password and select Next.
30. Select Next to create an emergency repair diskette.
31. Select or deselect components by clicking the check boxes next to the components and press Enter twice to continue.
32. Select which type of network to which the server will be attached and select Next.
33. Choose whether or not to install Microsoft Internet Information Server and select Next.
34. If you use the integrated Ethernet Adapter, choose Select from list. If you do not use the integrated Ethernet Adapter, install your adapter as necessary and continue to step 41.
35. Insert the Ethernet Support Diskette, select Have Disk, and select Next.
36. Switch to the A:\winnt351 directory and select Next.
37. Accept AMD PCNET Family Ethernet Adapter and select Next.
38. If you chose to install Microsoft Internet Information Server, TCP/IP Protocol is selected by default. Select Network Protocols to install and select Next when you are finished.
39. Select which Network Services that you want to install and select Next twice when you are finished.

NOTE: At the "AMD PCNET PCI Ethernet Adapter v3.11" screen, select Continue. If you fail to do that, the integrated Ethernet adapter may improperly function. You might see a "TCP/IP Setup" screen at this point that asks if you want to use DHCP. The default selection is NO. You will need to respond appropriately.

40. You will now need to configure any Network Protocols specified earlier in setup. Information required for each protocol varies by your specific network configuration.

NOTE: If a Setup Message error appears that requests that the "Windows NT CD-ROM be placed into a drive", place the "AMD PCNET PCI Ethernet Adapter driver diskette" into drive A.

41. Deselect any network bindings that you do not wish to install and select Next twice to start the network and continue the installation process.

NOTE: You will have to know the user name and password to be able to connect to the proper domain.

42. Type the name of the domain to which this server will connect and select Next.

NOTE: At this point, you might be asked to complete several screens that pertain to directories needed for the Microsoft Internet Information Server (IIS). Complete these screens as appropriate and continue to step 43 when a screen is presented that has the option 3. Finish setup highlighted.

43. Select Next again to finish setup.
44. Select an appropriate date and time for the server as well as the appropriate time zone and press Next.
45. Setup will prompt you to choose a display mode. Select OK and select the Cancel button from the "Display Settings" screen to ignore this step for now. The correct video drivers will be installed as a result of step 49.
46. Insert the diskette labeled "Emergency Repair Diskette" into the diskette drive when you are prompted and press Next to create an Emergency Repair Diskette.
47. Remove the diskette and CD-ROM and press Next to restart the server. The installation process is now complete.
48. Install the Windows NT 4.0 Service Pack 3. See "Appendix B" for further details.
49. Install the S3 Trio 64V+ Video driver. See "Appendix C" for further details.

Appendix A: Installing Windows NT Server 4.0 Service Pack 3
NOTE: You will need about 75 MB of free disk space to unpack the Service Pack.

1. Download the Service Pack onto your hard disk drive. Be sure to select the 128-bit version if you use the US/Canadian version of Windows NT.
2. Run the file nt4sp3_i.exe from a command prompt or from an explore screen.
3. Press Enter at the "Service Pack Setup" panel to begin the installation process.
4. Agree to the license and select Yes. Press Enter to install the Service Pack.
5. Select the option to create an Uninstall directory, or not, and press Enter twice to continue.
6. The Service Pack is then copied to your server.
7. If the message "If you want to replace PATH>\winnt\system32\SCHANNEL.DLL" appears, select Replace.
8. After the installation process is complete, select OK or press Enter to restart the server.

Appendix B: Installing S3 TRIO 64V+ Video Driver
NOTE: This section is an excerpt from the Windows NT 4.0 Device Drivers for S3 TRIO 64V+ Diskette README.TXT. Windows NT Server 4.0 Service Pack 3 or later must be installed prior to attempting to install this device driver. See "Appendix A" for installation instructions.

1. Start the system with Windows NT 4.0 installed.

NOTE: When the"Please select the operating system to start..." message appears, select Windows NT Workstation, version 4.00 VGA mode.

2. From Start, select the settings group, and select the Control Panel icon.
3. In the "Control Panel", double click the Display icon.
4. In the "Settings" screen, select the Display Type... button.
5. From the "Display Type" panel, and in the "Adapter Type" section, select the Change... button.
6. In the "Change Display" panel, select the Have Disk... button.
7. Insert the new display driver diskette into the A drive and select the OK button.
8. From the list of displayed S3 devices, select your S3 device.
9. From third-party drivers, select the Yes button to proceed.
10. If a message appears stating that "The driver is already installed on the system and if you want to use the current or new drivers", be sure to select the New button.
11. If you are prompted for the driver diskette a second time, select the Continue button.
12. When the message "The drivers were successfully installed" appears, remove the display driver diskette, and select the OK button.
13. Back at the "Display Type" panel, select the Close button.
14. Back at the "Display Properties" panel, select the Close button.
15. When you see the "System Settings Change" panel, ask "If you wish to restart your computer", select Yes to restart now.
