Follow the eserver xSeries network operating system (NOS) installation instructions provided in this document in sequential order unless these instructions advise you differently. Windows and messages might differ from those in this document. Throughout this document, the term select is used to denote the use of arrow keys or the mouse to make a selection from a menu.

Before installing Windows 2000
This document provides xSeries 342 system users with the installation instructions for a basic Windows 2000 Server installation process. Windows 2000 Server presents many different installation options. You might install or uninstall options that will facilitate tuning the xSeries 342 server to meet your individual needs. This might result in windows and messages that will differ from those in this document. Be sure to follow these instructions for installing Windows 2000 precisely to ensure that you install Windows 2000 correctly. Windows 2000 allows you to install components after you have completed the installation process. Determine if the system is equipped with an IBM ServeRAID card. If you have equipped your xSeries 342 with a ServeRAID card, please review “3.0 Appendix" before you proceed with the installation instructions in section "2.0."
NOTE: If you have a system that is equipped with a ServeRAID card, you must perform additional procedures.

Installation instructions

  1. Insert the "Windows 2000 Setup CD" into the CD-ROM drive and restart system. The system will boot from the "Windows 2000 Setup CD".
  2. The "Windows 2000 setup" window will display after a short delay. The Windows 2000 setup will take a few minutes to load The "Welcome to Setup" will display at the top right corner of the window. Press Enter to install the Windows 2000 Server.
  3. The "Windows 2000 licensing agreement" will display. Read the licensing agreement and press the Page Down key to scroll to the bottom of the window. Then choose I Agree by pressing F8.
  4. "Windows 2000 Setup" will show all hard disk storage available on the system.
  5. You might select or create a partition to install Windows 2000 Server. Select one of the following three options:
    • Allow setup to create a partition - Select non-partitioned space - and press Enter. Setup will partition the entire disk as one primary partition.
    • Create a Partition - To create a partition, highlight the non-partitioned space on the hard drive. Press the C key to create a partition on unused space on the hard drive. Enter the size of the partition you wish to create.
    • Delete a Partition - Only use this option if there are partitions that need to be permanently deleted to allow enough room to create new partitions.
  6. After you select a drive to partition, setup will prompt you to select a file system. Select the NTFS file system (unless you dual boot with an operating system that does not support NTFS).
  7. Windows setup will begin to format the selected partition and copy the appropriate files onto the selected partition. This process will take several minutes.
  8. The system restarts to the graphical portion of setup (Windows 2000 setup wizard). Windows setup will create a "Welcome window" when Windows 2000 is fully loaded. Click Next to continue.
  9. Windows setup will automatically install and configure devices in the computer. This process will take several minutes.
  10. The "Regional Settings" window will default to U.S. settings. Make changes if you do not install the system in the US Click Next to continue.
    NOTE: You might modify the regional settings, after you have installed Windows 2000, by using "Regional Options" in the "Control Panel".
  11. Setup will display the “Personalize Your Software” window that will prompt you for your name and organization name. In the "Name field", type your name, and in the "Organizations field", type the organizations name. The names selected will be used as default computer names. Applications that you install on the system later will use this information for the product registration and document identification. Click Next to Continue.
  12. Setup will prompt you for the "Windows 2000 Setup CD-Key". Type the Windows 2000 Setup CD-Key in the appropriate fields. Click Next to proceed.
  13. Setup will display the "Licensing Modes" window with two choices of licensing modes. Select the appropriate licensing mode for your organization. Click Next to continue.
  14. The system "Name and Administrator Password" window will display. You will be prompted for an administrator password and computer name. (Notice that Setup uses the organization name (entered earlier) as a suggested name for the computer.) Type your desired computer name and password. Click Next to continue.
    NOTE: Passwords are case sensitive. Be sure to use a combination of upper and lower case letters with at least one number for your password.
  15. From the "Name and Administrator Password" window, select or deselect components for the installation process. To install a component, select the box next to the component. Components that you do not select will not be installed. Click Next to continue.
  16. At the "Time Zone" window, set the current time for Windows 2000. To change the date, click the button to the right of the date. To change the time, highlight the value you want to change and enter the correct values by using the keyboard, or by using the up and down arrow keys. Click Next to continue.
    NOTE
    : Windows 2000 services perform many tasks that are dependent on the successful completion of the computer’s time and date settings. Be sure to select the correct time zone for the systems location to avoid subsequent problems.
  17. From the "Networking Settings" window, select typical or custom settings. If you are prompted, enter the appropriate network information. Click Next to install Windows networking components.
  18. From the "Workgroup" or "Computer Domain" windows, select one of the following options:
    • No, this computer is not on a network, it is a network without a domain.
    • Yes, make this computer a member of the following domain box. Type the workgroup or domain name in the appropriate fields. Click Next to continue.
  19. Setup will display the "Installing Component" window, and it will display the status as setup installs and configures the remaining operating system components according to the options you specified. This step will take several minutes.
  20. Setup displays the "Performing Final Tasks" window, which shows the status as setup finishes copying the appropriate files.
  21. This process might take several minutes.
  22. Remove the "Windows Server CD" from the CD-ROM drive and click Finish. (Windows 2000 restarts and runs the newly installed version of Windows 2000 Server).
  23. After the Windows 2000 Server has finished booting up, Press Ctrl + Alt + Delete to logon. When the desktop displays, you will see Windows 2000 configure your server wizard. The server wizard will assist in the set up of any additional Windows 2000 components on your server. This wizard will help configure the additional components that you selected during the installation process.

Appendix

Updating Existing Drivers
The following instructions will update the IBM Advance System Management Device Driver, Advance System Management Firmware and the IBM Remote Supervisor. Updating the IBM Remote Supervisor results in added System Management Interconnect support for the onboard Integrated System Management Processor and added support for redundant cooling fans.
NOTE: Before updating the Advance System Management Device Driver in Windows, the firmware for the Advance System Management Processor Firmware should be updated.

Updating the Advance System Management Processor Firmware

  1. Make Sure the system is powered down. Insert the Advance System Management Processor Firmware Update diskette into the diskette driver and power up the system. For information on downloading the Advance System Management Processor Firmware Update, refer to section “ 3.7 Where to download device drivers and files”.Note: The system should be set to boot from the diskette drive. If not, use POST/BIOS setup utility to configure the diskette drive as a boot device.
  2. From the main option menu, select "Update System Management Processor".
  3. When the update completes, remove the diskette from the drive and press Enter to restart the system.

Updating the IBM Advance System Management Device Driver

  1. To install the Advanced System Management Processor (service processor) device driver, insert the Advanced System Management Processor driver diskette into the diskette drive. For information on downloading the Advance System Management Processor driver, refer to section “Where to download device drivers and files”.
  2. Right-click one of the unknown devices and a pull down menu will display. Select Properties. Look under Location and it should say “on PCI standard ISA Bridge”. If it does not, click cancel and right-click the other unknown device.
  3. Click Update Driver and a "Welcome to Upgrade Device driver Wizard" window will display. Click Next.
  4. An "Optional Search Location" menu will display. Deselect everything but the Floppy Disk Drive. Click Next.
  5. When the "System found a driver for device" prompt displays, click Next to install the driver. You will now be prompted to restart the computer. Select Yes if you do not have any more unknown devices to install and No if you still have an unknown device.

Updating the IBM Remote Supervisor Update Diskette

  1. Make sure your system is powered down and insert the IBM Remote Supervisor Update diskette in the diskette drive. For information on downloading the IBM Remote Supervisor Update, refer to section “Where to download device drivers and files”.
  2. Power on your system to boot from diskette drive.
    NOTE: If your system does not boot from the diskette, use POST/BIOS setup utility to configure the diskette driver.
  3. From the main option menu, select "Update System Management Firmware".
  4. Follow the on window instructions to complete the update.

ServeRAID
The installation instructions for installing the ServeRAID controller card as the primary controller are listed below. The instructions vary depending on the type of ServeRAID you install. Please view section for your adapter..
NOTE: You should set configurations for the IBM ServeRAID card before you install Windows 2000.

Installing IBM ServeRAID-3L, 3H or 4H device drivers

  1. Insert the ServeRAID CD into the CD-ROM drive immediately after the system has booted.
  2. Shortly after you insert the "ServeRAID CD", an IBM ServeRAID window will display followed by a window that displays the current BIOS and firmware levels currently installed on your ServeRAID card. If they need to be updated, then click Update, if not, skip to step 4.
  3. When the system has completed updating its files, you will be prompted to restart the system. Keep the ServeRAID CD in the CD-ROM drive and restart the system.
  4. The system will boot off the IBM ServeRAID CD again; however, this time, ServeRAID utilities will start and will be used to create and initialize the ServeRAID logical disks.
    NOTE: You must create and initialize the ServeRAID disks for a boot partition to be visible to Windows 2000. For documentation on how to do this, please visit Software and device drivers.
  5. After you have created and initialized the ServeRAID disks, remove the ServeRAID CD and insert the "Windows 2000 CD-ROM". Restart the system and continue with step 2 under section "Installation instructions". After completing the installation of Windows 2000 Server, return and follow the remaining steps (Installing IBM ServeRAID-3L, 3H or 4H Device Drivers, step 6) to update the ServeRAID-3x or 4H driver.
  6. The ServeRAID Driver on the IBM ServeRAID CD-ROM might not have a digital signature. To insure that a digitally signed driver is installed, refer to section “Where to download device drivers and files” and download the latest digitally signed driver.
    NOTE: Drivers that are not digitally signed will be overwritten by the installation of the Windows 2000 service pack. This could result in an unusable configuration. Be sure to use the digitally signed drivers.
  7. After you download the ServeRAID driver from the web, update the ServeRAID driver on the system. Insert the diskette that contains the current "IBM ServeRAID driver" into the diskette drive.
  8. From the "Desktop", right-click My Computer and select Manage to display the "Computer Management" window.
  9. From the "Computer Management" window, click Device Manager. A list of devices installed on the system will display. From this list, double-click SCSI and RAID controllers to expand.
  10. Double-click IBM ServeRAID Adapter to display the properties window for the IBM ServeRAID adapter.
  11. From the "IBM ServeRAID properties" window, click the Driver tab. The following list of details will display:
    • Driver provider
    • Driver date
    • Driver version
    • Provider of digital signature
  12. Please make a note of these details. You should later use the note to see if the driver was updated and to see if the updated driver has a digital signature.
  13. To start the upgrade device driver wizard, click the Update Driver button.
  14. The "Welcome to the upgrade device driver wizard" window will display. Click Next to continue.
  15. The Wizard should display the IBM ServeRAID adapter as its hardware device to upgrade. Select Search for a suitable driver for my device and click Next.
  16. The Wizard will prompt you for a search location. Insert the floppy disk that contains the driver, select the search location (location of driver), and click Next. The Wizard will now perform a search for the driver from the selected location.
  17. The Wizard will indicate that it has found a driver that is a closer match for the device (IBM ServeRAID Adapter) than the current driver. Click Next to install the updated driver.
  18. After the Wizard has completed installing the driver, click Finish. Refer back to the "IBM ServeRAID-3H or 3L Controller Properties" window. Visit SERV-RAID.html to compare the driver version displayed with the version and use the most current version.
  19. Restart after the driver update has been completed.

Installing ServeRAID-4L(x) and 4M(x) device drivers
NOTE: Device drivers for the ServeRAID-4M(x) and 4L(x) controllers are installed while you install Windows 2000.

  1. Insert the "ServeRAID CD" into the CD-ROM drive immediately after the system has booted.
  2. Shortly after you insert the "ServeRAID CD", an "IBM ServeRAID" window will display followed by a window that displays the old BIOS and Firmware. Click Update.
  3. When the system has completed updating its files, you will be prompted to restart. Keep the "ServeRAID CD" in the CD-ROM drive and restart the system.
  4. The system will boot off the IBM ServeRAID CD again; however, this time, the ServeRAID utilities will be used to create and initialize the ServeRAID disks.
    NOTE: You must create and initialize the ServeRAID disks for a boot partition to be visible to Windows 2000. For documentation on how to do this, please visit Software and device drivers.
  5. After you have created and initialized the ServeRAID disks, remove the "ServeRAID CD", and insert the "Windows 2000 CD" into the CD-ROM Drive and press Ctrl + Alt + Delete to restart the server.
  6. After you restart the server, the "Press F6 if you need to install a third party SCSI or RAID driver" message will display.
  7. Press F6.
    NOTE: This message will display immediately after the window changes from black to blue. You have only a few seconds to press F6.
  8. After Windows 2000 loads the appropriate files, "Windows 2000" will display a window where you can manually specify a controller. When this window displays, press the S key to specify additional devices.
  9. When you are prompted to insert the Manufactures - supplied hardware support disk, insert the IBM ServeRAID Device Drivers diskette into the diskette driver, and press Enter. For information on downloading the IBM ServeRAID Device Drivers diskette, refer to section “Where to download device drivers and files”.
    NOTE: The driver that you installed might not have a digital signature. A digitally signed driver will be posted on the IBM Web site as soon as it is available. A non-digitally signed driver will be overwritten by the installation of a Windows 2000 service pack. This could result in an unusable configuration. Always use the signed driver.
  10. You will be prompted to select a ServeRAID controller. Select IBM ServeRAID- 4M(x) or 4L(x) Controller (Windows 2000), and press Enter. The "Setup is loading files (IBM ServeRAID-4M(x) or 4L(x) Controller (Windows 2000)" message will display.
  11. When you are prompted, press Enter to continue.
  12. You might now continue the Windows 2000 Server installation process by scrolling to step 4 under "Installation Instructions".

Installing ServeRAID Manager

  1. Be sure that the "IBM ServeRAID Manager" is installed on the Windows 2000 Server to maximize the performance of the IBM ServeRAID card installed.
  2. From "Windows 2000 Server", insert the "IBM ServeRAID CD" into the CD-ROM drive.
  3. A "Welcome" window will display which will give you a warning to exit all windows programs before you run the setup program.
  4. Exit all Windows programs and click Next.
  5. The "Licensing Agreement" window will display. After you read the license agreement, click Yes to continue.
  6. Select the operating system you will use on the server, if you run Windows NT or Windows 2000. Click Next to continue.
  7. The option to "install the ServeRAID Manager Agent" will display. Select Yes, install service and click Next to continue.
  8. Click Next again to install ServeRAID Manager.
  9. From this window, you must select the location to which you will install ServeRAID. ServeRAID is defaulted to setup in the c:\Program Files\Raidman directory. If this directory is the location you want, click Next and setup will install ServeRAID Manager.

Installing Service Pack
After you complete the Windows 2000 installation process, be sure to install the latest operating system service pack. Visit http://www.microsoft.com/windows2000/downloads/servicepacks/ to download the latest operating system service pack. Review the accompanying instructions and warnings to install the operating system service pack.
Warning: Before you install the "Windows Service Pack", make sure that the driver for the ServeRAID device is digitally signed. A non-digitally signed driver will be overwritten by the installation of a Windows 2000 service pack. ServeRAID will not function if this step happens. For information on downloading the IBM ServeRAID Device Drivers diskette, refer to section “Where to download device drivers and files”.

  1. Change to the directory to where the Service Pack files reside (hard disk or CD).
  2. Run Setup.
  3. Click the agree box to accept the licensing agreement.
  4. Click Install.
  5. After the installation process is complete, restart the system.

Where to download device drivers and files

Known issues
Warning: Before you install the Windows Service Pack, ensure that the driver for the ServeRAID device is digitally signed. A non-digitally signed driver will be overwritten during the installation of Windows 2000 Service Pack. If the non-digitally signed driver is overwritten, ServeRAID will not function.
