Steps


Perform the following steps to install Microsoft Windows 2000 Professional.

Preparing for the installation

  1. Download and install the latest Flash BIOS available for your system.The current BIOS level is available at the IBM Personal Computing Support site. Read the accompanying text file for instructions.
  2. Modify the Boot Sequence.
  3. Boot the system and press F1 to enter the Configuration/Setup Utility.
  4. Select Start Options.
  5. Select Startup Sequence.
  6. Change the Primary Startup Sequence to the following:
    1. Diskette Drive 0
    2. CD-ROM
    3. Hard Disk 0
    4. Escape to the main menu and Save the Settings.
  7. Exit the Configuration/Setup Utility .

Installing
  1. Insert the Windows 2000 Professional CD in the CD-ROM drive and restart the system.
  2. When the machine starts to boot, watch for the prompt "Hit any key to boot from CD". Press a key at this time.
  3. At the first prompt, press ENTER to setup Windows 2000.
  4. Read the End User License Agreement and press F8 to agree to the conditions.
  5. If there are existing partitions on the hard disk, you may leave the partitions or delete and create new partitions. Follow the directions at the bottom of the screen to modify your partitions. A 2000 MB partition is recommended for the installation of Windows 2000 Professional.
  6. When selecting the partition to install Windows 2000 Professional, you must choose a file system - either NTFS or FAT. FAT is recommended for the boot partition.
  7. Setup will format and copy the necessary installation files to the hard disk drive.
  8. Setup will restart the system and begin the detection portion of the installation.
  9. Click NEXT on the Regional Settings window.
  10. Type your name and organization, then select NEXT.
  11. Type the Windows 2000 Professional Product Key, then select NEXT.
  12. Type the computer name and administrator password , then select NEXT.
  13. Type the Date and Time and Time Zone settings, then select NEXT.
  14. Choose the Network Settings installation method, either Typical or Custom (custom is recommended) and then select NEXT.
  15. Select the Client and Protocol to be used, then select NEXT.
  16. Select the network Workgroup or Domain option and type the workgroup or domain name. Select NEXT.
  17. Setup will complete the installation.
  18. Remove the Windows 2000 CD from the CD ROM drive and select FINISH to restart the system.
  19. The first screen after the reboot will be the Network Identification Wizard screen. Click NEXT to continue.
  20. Select whether one person will always be logging on, or if each user must log on with a unique user name and password , then select NEXT.
  21. Select FINISH to complete the Network Identification Wizard and to access the Windows 2000 Professional Desktop.
