Implementing RMM Catalog Synchronization (CATSYNCH)

Question & Answer

Question

In the past the RMM Inventory Management (EDGHSKP) Vital Records Selection (VRSEL) process relied upon catalog LOCATEs to determine whether a data set is known to the catalog. RMM added the ability to track the catalog status of a data set. It can be enabled by specifying the PARMLIB option CATSYSID. This new function can greatly reduce the length of time it takes to run RMM Housekeeping if you retain many data sets by catalog control (WHILECATALOG).

Answer

In order to implement CATSYNCH processing, follow these steps:

1. If you are synchronizing the RMM control data set (CDS) with user catalogs in a fully shared catalog environment, you need to add CATSYSID(*) to the RMM PARMLIB member. This tells RMM to track the catalog status of data sets known to RMM. If your catalogs are not fully shared, you need to specify CATSYSID(sys_ID_list) on each system sharing the RMM CDS to provide a list of RMM system IDs that share tape data set user catalogs with this RMM subsystem.

2. Before running CATSYNCH the first time, it is important to ensure that there are no errors in the catalogs. Execute EDGHSKP with a parm of CATSYNCH, VERIFY. The first actual run of CATSYNCH corrects any messages regarding the two databases not matching. Any messages that you receive regarding the structure can be evaluated. Also, you might want to run an IDCAMS EXAMINE against the catalogs.

3. Once physical errors are corrected, you can run EDGHSKP with a parm of CATSYNCH. It synchronizes the RMM CDS with catalog.

See the section entitled "Running DFSMSrmm Catalog Synchronization" for complete setup information, in the "Performing Inventory Management" chapter of the "DFSMSrmm Implementation and Customization Guide" manual.
