Troubleshooting
Problem
IBM System x or blade servers with Integrated Management Module (IMM) present an internal Local Area Network (LAN) over Universal Serial Bus (USB) interface to the installed operating system. Depending on operating system type, it may be recognized as aRemote Network Driver Interface Specification (RNDIS) interface or Communications Device Class (CDC) interface. If this interface is disabled, executing IBM Dynamic System Analysis (DSA) tool on the operating system will enable the interface.

RETAIN tip: H203375
Symptom
IBM System x or blade servers with Integrated Management Module (IMM) present an internal Local Area Network (LAN) over Universal Serial Bus (USB) interface to the installed operating system. Depending on operating system type, it may be recognized as a Remote Network Driver Interface Specification (RNDIS) interface or Communications Device Class (CDC) interface.
If this interface is disabled, executing IBM Dynamic System Analysis (DSA) tool on the operating system will enable the interface.
Affected configurations
The system may be any of the following IBM servers:
- System x3690 X5, type 7147, any model
- System x3690 X5, type 7148, any model
- System x3690 X5, type 7149, any model
- System x3690 X5, type 7192, any model
- System x3850 X5, type 7143, any model
- System x3850 X5, type 7145, any model
- System x3850 X5, type 7146, any model
- System x3850 X5, type 7191, any model
- System x3950 X5, type 7145, any model
The system is configured with at least one of the following:
- IBM Dynamic System Analysis (DSA) 3.10, any edition
- IBM Dynamic System Analysis (DSA) 3.20, any edition
- IBM Dynamic System Analysis (DSA) 3.30, any edition
- IBM Dynamic System Analysis (DSA) 3.40, any edition
This tip is not option specific.
Note: This does not imply that the network operating system will work under all combinations of hardware and software.
Please see the compatibility page for more information: http://www.ibm.com/systems/info/x86servers/serverproven/compat/us/
Workaround
When executing DSA tool, add --disable-IMM-LAN option.
Example command syntax:
| DSA.exe --disable-IMM-LAN DSA.bin --disable-IMM-LAN |
The RNDIS or CDC interface will be automatically disabled, upon end of DSA tool execution. Please see readme file of DSA tool for more information about available command options.
Additional information
DSA tool requires the RNDIS or CDC interface to communicate with IMM in order to collect necessary information. Therefore, if the interface is disabled, then DSA will try to enable it.
Some environments may have RNDIS or CDC interface purposely disabled due to reasons such as security. By adding --disable-IMM-LAN option, DSA will automatically disable the interface upon finishing log collection, but note that the interface will be enabled for a few minutes during DSA execution.
For VMware operating system, refer to this RETAIN tip H202494 (MIGR-5087257).
