Hardware and Software Requirements

Note: There are no support extensions for IBM Spectrum Protect 7.1 products. Clients are encouraged to upgrade to a product release that is currently in support. See in IBM Spectrum Protect Family Products with Support Extension contracts available which releases are supported or which are the recommendations for replacement.

Note: The product known as IBM Spectrum Protect was named IBM Tivoli Storage Manager in releases earlier than 7.1.3. To learn more about the rebranding transition, see Tivoli Storage Manager branding transition to IBM Spectrum Protect.

IBM AIX requirements: IBM Spectrum Protect for Space Management release 7.1

Attention: To run the IBM Spectrum Protect for Space Management client, the IBM Spectrum Protect backup-archive client is required.
Thus you must follow the support statements listed in the web page Requirements web page: Requirements web page: IBM Spectrum Protect Client release 7.1 requirements, which is past End-of-Support (EOS) before you verify the IBM Spectrum Protect for Space Management support statements.
System System p, or compatible hardware as supported by AIX.
Disk Space 400 MB disk space required to install the IBM Spectrum Protect for Space Management client binary files In each IBM Spectrum Protect for Space Management managed file system
  • 1 GB free disk space
  • if the dsmscout daemon is used extra disk space is required:
1 KB times the value specified for the "maxfiles" option of the "dsmmigfs add" or "dsmmigfs update" command
Memory No extra Random-Access Memory (RAM) is required for product installation.
RAM requirements for running the product vary widely and depend on your environment, configuration, and tasks that you run. More RAM might be required to run the product.

Software

Communication Protocol One of the following:
  • TCP/IP, which comes standard with AIX
  • Shared Memory Protocol (with AIX server only)
Operating system
  • AIX 6.1.0 or higher 6.1 levels, xlC.rte 10.1.0.0 r higher xlC.rte levels
  • AIX 7.1.0 or higher 7.1 levels
  • AIX 7.2.0 or higher 7.2 levels (Beginning with 7.1.4.4)
File system

  • JFS2
  • GPFS 3.4.0.14 or higher 3.4.0.x fix pack levels
  • GPFS 3.5.0 or higher 3.5.0.x fix pack levels

  • GPFS 4.2.1 or higher 4.2.1.x fix pack levels (Beginning with 7.1.6)
Note:
  • When GPFS snapshots are used, GPFS 3.5.0.18 or higher is required (see Data loss when HSM recall to GPFS snapshot fails )
  • The product now known as IBM Spectrum Scale was named GPFS in releases earlier than 4.1
  • For HSM on JFS2 make sure that one of the following AIX APAR fixes are installed:
    • for AIX 6.1: IV22529
    • for AIX 7.1: IV22690

Extra Software

The HSM GUI requires:  JAVA™ 7 Runtime Environment
Note: Beginning with the IBM Spectrum Protect for Space Management client 7.1.2 the GUI is unsupported and not part of the file set anymore.

Other Notes

For the installation of IBM Spectrum Protect™ backup-archive client and IBM Spectrum Protect™ for Space Management client, the same (matching) release level is required.
On a GPFS cluster with AIX, Linux x86 or Linux on System z nodes, use the IBM Spectrum Protect for Space Management client only on one of these platforms to manage a shared file system. Do not use the IBM Spectrum Protect for Space Management client on different platforms to manage a file system shared among these platforms.
GPFS 3.4 was supported by IBM Spectrum Protect for Space Management client 7.1.0 but had to be withdrawn with IBM Spectrum Protect for Space Management client 7.1.1 because of technical reasons (APAR IT12256).
IBM Spectrum Scale SOBAR is supported and requires GPFS 3.5 TL 3 or later
GPFS AFM is supported beginning with the IBM Spectrum Protect for Space Management client 7.1.3 and requires GPFS level 4.1.1.1
The following IBM Spectrum Scale are EOS (end of support)
