IBM Security Verify Access Appliance Backup Supported Methods

Summary

This document serves as an addendum to the documentation at https://www.ibm.com/docs/en/sva/10.0.5?topic=settings-managing-snapshots regarding supported methods for backing up, restoring, migrating, and cloning appliances. This applies to both hardware and virtual.

Steps

The only supported method for backing up and restoring an appliance is using snapshots as documented at https://www.ibm.com/docs/en/sva/10.0.5?topic=settings-managing-snapshots and https://www.ibm.com/docs/en/sva/10.0.5?topic=maintenance-back-up-procedures.

A snapshot is meant to restore an appliance from which it was taken.  They are not meant to be used to clone appliances.

If a snapshot is taken from a node in a cluster then it must be applied to that node when it is part of the cluster.  This means if a node is lost it must be minimally rebuilt, added to the cluster, then the snapshot can be applied.
Other methods such as those listed below are not supported:
  • Hypervisor level snapshots and backups
  • VMware® VMotion™
  • KVM "virsh snapshot-create-as" command
  • Manually archiving and restoring a KVM <appliance-domain>.qcow2 disk file
  • Cloning VMs
  • Azure Live Migration
  • Zerto
  • Other 3rd-party tools
We have seen the above methods fail in customer environments.  These failures include the following:
  • The process of creating the Hypervisor level backup using the 3rd party tool
  • Real-time movement of the running image using the 3rd party tool
  • Data corruption which is later identified in a running appliance
IBM Customer Support does not provide support or assistance for any of the above failures.
Other customers use the RAPI with automation which for the purposes of this document is simply considered a rebuild and not backup and recovery.
The only supported method of backup and recovery are Verify Access Appliance snapshots.
