Troubleshooting
Problem
This document describes how to use the HMC to activate a IBM i network installation.
Resolving The Problem
This document describes how to use the HMC to activate a IBM i network installation.
Client Requirements
This applies to the logical partition being installed.
o | IBM i 6.1.1 or later Additional requirements:
- ipv6 install requires IBM i 7.2 or later. - vlan tag support requires IBM i 7.2. or later. |
o | Server Firmware POWER 7: 01Ax720 or later; 01Ax710_097 or later POWER 6: 01Ex350_085 or later Additional requirements:
- ipv6 install support requires POWER7 01Ax780 or higher. - vlan tag support requires POWER8 840 or higher. |
o | HMC 7.7.2 or later Additional requirements:
- Support for ipv6 install, GUI or REST API install requires HMC V8R8.2.0 or higher. - Support for vlan tagging requires HMC V8R8.4.0 or higher; enhanced GUI and CLI only. |
o | One of the following available Ethernet adapters with network connectivity to the install source server: -- PCI Ethernet adapter Additional requirements:
- IBM i 6.1.1 = MF56681 - IBM i 7.1 = MF56683 -- LHEA port (requires HMC 7.7.3 and later) -- Virtual Ethernet adapter (Requires Ex730_049 or later) |
Source/Server Requirements
This applies to the IBM i partition hosting the installation image.
o | IBM i 6.1 or greater. 6.1: PTF’s SI39390, SI35186, and SI35189. 7.1: PTF’s SI39238 |
o | The server must be able to share virtual optical images using version 3 or later of the Network File System (NFS). |
o | Install image of IBM i 6.1.1 or later.
o SI39390 o SI35186 o SI35189 o SI35747 o MF47284 o MF47285 |
o | A Server configured for network install of IBM i. Further information on the "source system" requirements and configuration can be found in IBM i Network Install using Network File System at ftp://ftp.software.ibm.com/systems/support/power/i/nfs_optical_upgrade.pdf |
o | Install image IBM i 7.1 TR2 and earlier do not support Jumbo frames. To disable jumbo frames on the source server: 1. CRTLINETH / CHGLINETH: MAXFRAME must be set to 1496. 2. ADDTCPIFC / CHGTCPIFC: MTU must be set to *LIND. |
Activate the partition for network installation
o | Configure alternate restart device The alternate restart device must be one of the supported adapters listed above. If a dual port card is tagged the top most port is used. The adapter must be assigned to the profile then tagged as the alternate restart device. Select the partition and click Configuration->Manage Profiles. Select the profile, and click Actions, edit. Click the Settings tab. Click the drop down arrow for Alternative restart device and select the Ethernet adapter to use for the network installation. |
o | Partition IPL source must be D Click Partition properties, then the Settings tab. Change IPL source to D. Note: This can also be set in the next step. |
o | Activate the lpar with the install options CLI Activate Note: Prior to V8R8.2.0, this option is only available using HMC command line interface (CLI) To activate and perform a network installation of an IBM i partition:
-f partition-profile-name [-k keylock-position] [-i IPL-source] --ip IP-address [--netmask network-mask] --gateway gateway-IP-address --serverip server-IP-address --serverdir server-directory [--speed {auto | 1 | 10 | 100 | 1000}] [--duplex {auto | half | full}] [--mtu {1500 | 9000}] Required installation information includes:
Note: If the server and partition are on the same subnet, you need to set the gateway to be the same as the IP of the installation server. Example chsysstate -m CS6520 -r lpar -o on -n test -f networkinstall -i d --ip 192.168.1.10 --netmask 255.255.255.0 --gateway 192.168.1.100 --serverip 192.168.1.100 --serverdir /catalog_directory GUI Activate This is available on with HMC 8.8.2 (with the tech preview login option) or later. |
Notes:
1. The HMC no longer enforces the restriction that the alternate restart device Ethernet port's MAC address has been "discovered" using hardware discovery.
2. After the installation, the user must go into DST/SST and enter the correct gateway in the service tool LAN adapter configuration (if they plan to use it for anything else, such as LAN console, future upgrades, and so on).
