Important information regarding minimum Load Source requirements for 7.3

Starting with IBM i 7.2, the minimum load source requirements have changed for external and virtual load source LUNs.  The minimum load source sizes are listed below:
  • Minimum of 35 GB for 520-byte sectors (DS8000, virtual disks with VIOS as server)
  • Minimum of 41 GB (to get 35 GB usable space)  for 512-byte sectors (SVC, Storwize, virtual disks with VIOS VSCSI or IBM i as server)
  • Minimum of 70 GB for Native-attached SAS/SCSI (Both 520-byte or 4K sectors)

The following PTFs are required before upgrading to IBM i 7.3:

Load source and additional LIC space requirements PTFs:

  • v7r1m0f -  MF59277

Virtual Media Install PTFs:

  • v7r1m0f -  MF59283
  • v7r2m0f -  MF59284

Important information regarding minimum Load Source requirements for 7.2

November 2014 - IBM i 7.2 Technology Refresh 1

Starting with IBM i 7.2 TR1, the minimum load source requirements have changed for external and virtual load source LUNs, and fixed issues with RAIDed Native-attached SAS drives.  The minimum load source sizes are listed below:
  • Minimum of 35 GB for 520-byte sectors (DS8000, virtual disks with VIOS as server)
  • Minimum of 40 GB (to get 35 GB usable space)  for 512-byte sectors (SVC, Storwize, virtual disks with VIOS VSCSI or IBM i as server)
  • Minimum of 70 GB for Native-attached SAS/SCSI (Both 520-byte or 4K sectors)

The following PTFs are required before upgrading to IBM i 7.2:

Load source and additional LIC space requirements PTFs:

  • v6r1m0f -  MF59327
  • v6r1m1f -  MF59328
  • v7r1m0f -  MF59277
  • v7r2m0f -  MF59329

Virtual Media Install PTFs:

  • v6r1m0f -  MF59281
  • v6r1m1f -  MF59282
  • v7r1m0f -  MF59283
  • v7r2m0f -  MF59284

Attention Customers who have installed 7.2 database group PTFs SF99702 level 11 or applied individual PTFs SI60308 or SI60333

Following the install of R720 database group PTF SF99702 level 11 or apply of individual PTF SI60308 or PTF SI60333, a flag in SQL views is incorrectly set to indicate the view contains a system-time period.  This can cause a problem during the install of R730 Boss Option 1 when re-creating views built on SQL system catalogs.

To prevent this R730 installation failure, apply R720 PTF SI60586 which includes a program (QQQFIXVW) to correct views built on SQL system catalogs.

The best practice is to run this program "CALL QSYS/QQQFIXVW" in restricted state before your upgrade to R730.  This program will correct all views built on SQL system catalogs and prevent a possible R730 upgrade failure.

April 2014 - IBM i 7.2
The November 2014 IBM i Technology Refresh 1 has changed the load source requirements and also fixed issues with RAIDed Native-attached SAS drives.  You should consider obtaining IBM i Technology Refresh 1 or later LIC media before continuing on with the upgrade.
