Abstract

This technical workshop provides expert knowledge and a hands-on training experience covering the architecture and implementation of IBM SAN Volume Controller, IBM FlashSystem® FS5000/FS7200/FS9200 family, and IBM FlashSystem 900 with IBM i by using IBM PowerVM® Virtual I/O Server (VIOS) virtualization.
It also educates you in planning considerations, storage tiering, performance monitoring, and high availability and disaster recovery solutions with IBM PowerHA® SystemMirror® for IBM i and IBM Spectrum® Virtualize systems.

Objective
  • Become familiar with IBM Spectrum Virtualize and IBM FlashSystem storage architecture and functions

Outline
This workshop introduce you into IBM flash technology and enable a deeper understanding of the IBM Spectrum Virtualize storage family architecture and functions including the integration with IBM i and IBM PowerHA. IBM PowerVM VIOS virtualization that uses NPIV and Live Partition Mobility, and management of a virtualized environment and monitoring and alerting by IBM Spectrum Control are covered.
You have the opportunity for an extensive hands-on with the included storage systems and VIOS virtualization for IBM i. Guided by IBM experts you learn about implementing IBM Spectrum Virtualize and IBM FlashSystem storage for IBM i including VIOS configuration and SAN switch zoning. You have the opportunity for performance monitoring of an IBM i storage workload with IBM Spectrum Control and you also implement and test an IBM i high availability, disaster recovery solution with IBM PowerHA.

  • Presentation: IBM Spectrum Virtualize software
  • Presentation: IBM PowerVM VIOS introduction
  • Presentation: Implementing IBM i with IBM Spectrum Virtualize storage
  • Hands-on:
    • Setup VIOS and switches for IBM i connection to IBM Spectrum Virtualize
    • Create storage Logical Unit Numbers (LUN) and host-connections
    • Install IBM i
Day 2
  • Presentation: IBM Spectrum Virtualize hardware
  • Presentation: IBM PowerVM VIOS update, backup, and restore
  • Presentation: IBM flash technology and IBM FlashSystem family
  • Presentation: IBM Spectrum Control
  • Hands-on:
    • Virtualize IBM FlashSystem 900 behind IBM Spectrum Virtualize
    • Run IBM i workload and track performance with IBM Spectrum Virtualize Graphical User Interface (GUI), IBM Spectrum Control, and IBM i
Day 3
  • Presentation: Implementing IBM i with IBM FlashSystem 900
  • Presentation: High availability and disaster recovery solutions for IBM i with IBM PowerHA and copy services
  • Hands-on:
    • Setup IBM Authorized SAM Provider (IASP) high availability solution for IBM i with IBM PowerHA and IBM Spectrum Virtualize metro mirror
    • Run disaster recovery tests
    • Setup IASP backup solution for IBM i with IBM PowerHA and IBM Spectrum Virtualize FlashCopy®
    • Test backup solution
Audience
This advanced course requires students to have basic skills in IBM i installation and management and a general knowledge about SAN storage. It is targeted at persons interested in deepening their architectural and implementation skills for IBM Spectrum Virtualize family storage solutions for IBM i including IBM PowerVM virtualization, IBM PowerHA SystemMirror for IBM i high-availability, and IBM Spectrum Control monitoring and alerting.
