How To

Summary

This document shows how to reset the BMC of a 7063-CR2 HMC, to default settings. This operation might be necessary to reset the root password back to the default value, or to correct a problem with the BMC.

Environment

7062-CR2 Hardware Management Console Appliance, any BMC version

Steps

This procedure requires local access to the HMC.
1) Power on or restart the HMC
2) At the Petitboot menu, select Exit to shell
3) Enter the following ipmitool to reset the BMC to default settings:
ipmitool raw 0x3A 0x11
NOTE: Wait for the HMC to power off and for the LED on the Power button to come back to a flashing pattern. The operation can take 5 - 10 minutes.
4) Power the HMC On by pressing the power button.
The BMC network settings are lost during the reset, and the root password returns to the default value.
To reconfigure the BMC network settings from Petitboot, follow these steps.
Alternatively the BMC network settings can be configured with the following HMC task:
  • HMCs older than v10r2.1030, select "Console Management -> Console Settings -> Change BMC/IPMI Network Settings"
  • HMCs at v10r2.1030, or newer, select "HMC Management -> BMC connectivity"
