How to configure DOORS Client communication with a license server while behind a firewall

Question & Answer

Question

How do you configure an IBM Rational DOORS client to communicate with a license server while behind a firewall?

Cause

The procedure to configure license use behind firewalls is not documented.

Answer

You must specify the daemon port in the license file.

By default FlexNet, the DOORS license mechanism, will use two ports:

  • a fixed port defined in the SERVER line of your license file
  • a dynamically selected port for the vendor daemon

To run Flex behind a firewall, you must modify your license file so the vendor daemon uses a fixed port. Then open both ports in the firewall to allow bi-directional communication. A license.dat typically will have the server name and default port number and vendor daemon associated with Rational tools.

For example
SERVER IBM-A5A7N7VIQU0 DISK_SERIAL_NUM=D0561D3A 27000
VENDOR ibmratl

Steps to configure license for firewalls:
  1. Change the license file DAEMON line to include a port specific port
    DAEMON ibmratl PORT=27001

  2. Set the bi-directional port for the server and daemon in the firewall

  3. Start the License Server
