Problem

This document describes some issues discovered by the Center for Microsoft Technology, NSVT Netfinity Server group, while testing Microsoft Windows 2000 Server and Advanced Server. The issues described in this document are categorized by server model.

Resolving The Problem

This document describes some issues discovered by the Center for Microsoft Technology, NSVT Netfinity Server group, while testing Microsoft Windows 2000 Server and Advance Server.

The issues described in this document are categorized by server models.

The majority of issues are directly dependent on the BIOS level used. All testing was performed using the BIOS levels as listed below.

Hints and tips for all levels of Netfinity servers
The servers listed below will have two unknown devices listed under Device Manager. One is for the Service Processor Driver and the second is for the Active PCI Filter Driver. You should install the latest Service Processor Driver 1.10 (WRPT04A). While Active PCI Filter Driver is listed under Device Manager, it is not supported under the BIOS listed above. You should ignore the second Unknown Device under Device Manager until further notice.

Symptom
The LG CRN-8241B 24X CD-ROM drive is incompatible with Windows 2000 if the firmware is not updated. The Windows 2000 Setup program will fail during installation or the CD-ROM drive will not function properly.

Affected configurations
Any servers that have the LG CRN-8241B CD-ROM.

Solution
Update the LG CRN-8241B CD-ROM firmware prior to installing Windows 2000. Click here to download the latest firmware update .


Symptom
The system is booting from the Windows 2000 CD instead of the bootable floppy disk in the diskette drive.

Affected configurations
All Netfinity servers

Solution
This symptom can be corrected by one of two methods:
  1. Remove the Windows 2000 CD from the CD-ROM drive when attempting to boot from a floppy disk.
  2. Boot into BIOS and change the startup sequence so that the floppy drive is listed before the CD-ROM drive.

Symptom
Device Manger incorrectly indicates that a PS/2 mouse and keyboard are installed.

Affected configurations
All Netfinity servers using a USB keyboard and mouse

Solution
Ignore the listing in Device Manager for the PS/2 mouse and keyboard.


Symptom
The IBM Token Ring adapter does not function properly

Affected configurations
All Netfinity servers

Solution
Flash the firmware of the IBM Token Ring adapter to the latest level to ensure full functionality of the adapter. Click here to download the latest firmware update.


Symptom
If a ServeRAID controller (or any bootable SCSI controller) is inserted in Bus 0, the ServeRAID controller takes precedence over the onboard SCSI controller. As a result, if the master boot record is located on the onboard SCSI controller, the system will not boot from the master boot record.

Affected configurations
All Netfinity servers

Solution
Do not insert a ServeRAID (or any bootable SCSI controller) in Bus 0.


Symptom
A blue screen error appears when an attempt to move or remove the hard drive which contains the pagefile during hibernation (S4) is made.

Affected configurations
All Netfinity servers

Solution
Do not remove the hard drive thatcontains the pagefile during hibernation.


Hints and tips for Netfinity 3500 Servers
Symptom
The Netfinity 3500 is an APM machine but an ACPI option is available in BIOS.

Affected configurations
Any Netfinity 3500 Server

Solution
Boot into BIOS and verify that the ACPI option is disabled.


Hints and tips for Netfinity 4000R Servers
Symptom
The Netfinity 4000R is an APM machine but an ACPI option is available in BIOS.

Affected configurations
Any Netfinity 4000R Server

Solution
Boot into BIOS and verify that the ACPI option is disabled.


Symptom
A yellow exclamation point appears in Device Manager for com ports 1 and 2 if the COM/LPT port setting in BIOS is set to Auto Config. This configuration prevents the com ports from being used.

Affected configurations
Any Netfinity 4000R Server

Solution
Boot into BIOS and change the COM/LPT port setting from Auto Config to Manual Config.


Hints and tips for Netfinity 5000 Servers
Symptom
The system fails to boot into Windows 2000 when a USB mouse and keyboard are used.

Affected configurations
Any Netfinity 5000 Server

Solution
Use a PS/2 mouse and keyboard to when you start the system.


Symptom
Various problems may occur during the setup / installation of Windows 2000

Affected configurations
Any Netfinity 5000 Server

Solution
Please ensure that you are at the latest level of the Service Processor firmware. Click here to download the latest Service Processor Firmware .


Hints and tips for Netfinity 5500, 5500 M10, and 5500 M20 Servers
Symptom
The Adaptec 2940UW SCSI controller hangs during post and will not boot into Windows 2000.

Affected configurations
Any Netfinity 5500, 5500 M10, or 5500 M20 Servers

Solution
No solution is available at this time. Please check back for any updates.


Symptom
Device Manager displays devices under Sound, Video & Game that are not installed on the system.

Affected configurations
Any Netfinity 5500 or 5500 M10 Server

Solution
Ignore the listings displayed in Device Manager.


Hints and tips for Netfinity 5600 and 5000 Servers
Symptom
After resuming from hibernation mode (S4), the USB keyboard does not work.

Affected configurations
Any Netfinity 5600 or 5000 Server

Solution
Reinstall the USB keyboard after resuming from hibernation mode (S4).


Hints and tips for Netfinity 7000 M10 Servers
Symptom
The Service Processor indicates a resource conflict with COM 3 even though no yellow exclamation point is indicated in Device Manager.

Affected configurations
Any Netfinity 7000 M10 Server

Solution
Ignore the report by the Service Processor.


Symptom
When a device is listed as Uninstalled in Device Manager and a second device is installed into the same bus, the first device is redetected.

Affected configurations
Any Netfinity 7000 M10 Server

Solution
Use the Stop or Eject applet in Systray to properly remove a device.


Symptom
When a PCI bridge device is installed after POST has completed but before the operating system has started, it will appear in Device Manager with a yellow exclamation mark and requires the system to be restarted.

Affected configurations
Any Netfinity 7000 M10 Server

Solution
Insert the PCI bridge device while the system is powered off.


Symptom
The server will not boot into Windows 2000 if the Service Processor adapter is not installed in the Management slot.

Affected configurations
Any Netfinity 7000 M10 Server

Solution
Do not remove the Service Processor adapter from the Management slot.
