Abstract

This document details the Hardware & Software requirements for the IBM Storage Protect™ Snapshot MMC Snap-in and Base System Services 8.1.21 component.

Content

The MMC Snap-in and Base System Services component supports:

  • Microsoft Exchange environments
  • Microsoft SQL Server environments
  • The File System and Custom Application support features

Software requirements

Following information describes the minimum software and operating system requirements when you use the IBM Storage Protect Snapshot MMC Snap-in and Base System Services component.

Indicates supported operating system. Later maintenance and modification levels to the operating system version are also supported.
* Both Server (Core) and Server with Desktop experience are supported.
Note: Windows Storage Server 2012 and 2012 R2 are only supported for functions that are also available and supported by the IBM Storage Protect Snapshot MMC Snap-in and Base System Services component on Windows Server 2012 and 2012 R2 Editions.
Note: When you use Server Core Mode, a remote GUI configuration is required to use all MMC GUI feature or function.

More software prerequisites

  • Microsoft prerequisites
    The following prerequisites from Microsoft are required and must be installed before you use IBM Storage Protect Snapshot on Windows:
    • Windows PowerShell 3 or Windows PowerShell 4
    • Windows Management Framework 3 or Windows Management Framework 4
    • Windows PowerShell 5 when used with Windows 10
    • Windows Management Framework 5 when used with Windows 10
       
    The following prerequisites from Microsoft are also required, and are installed automatically by IBM Storage Protect Snapshot MMC Snap-in and Base System Services 8.1.21.

    Note: Installation of these prerequisites might require a system restart. To avoid a system restart, ensure that these prerequisites are installed before you start the IBM Storage Protect Snapshot MMC Snap-in and Base System Services installation process.
    Note: These prerequisites are not automatically installed when you create your own silent installation package to install by using msiexec. In that scenario, you must manually ensure that the prerequisites are installed.
     
  • 64-bit MMC Snap-in and Base System Services 8.1.21 requires:

More requirements for File System and Custom Application support

  • IBM Storage Protect Snapshot VSS Requestor 8.1.21 component

Note: IBM Storage Protect Snapshot VSS Requestor is a component included in the IBM Storage Protect Snapshot on Windows 8.1.21 package. It is also known as the IBM Storage Protect backup-archive client 8.1.21.

Note: It is a requirement of the IBM Storage Protect Backup-Archive Client and the IBM Storage Protect API client that they remain in sync to the Version.Release.Modification level when used on the same Windows system.

Hardware requirements

The following information describes the minimum hardware and disk space requirements when you use the IBM Storage Protect Snapshot MMC Snap-in and Base System Services component.

  • A minimum of 930 MB of disk space for the product to be installed.
  • At least 2.1 GB disk space for "Microsoft prerequisites", which is installed automatically if they are not already installed on the system when you start the MMC Snap-in and Base System Services component installation.
    Note: Some of the prerequisites defined in this document might require a system restart. To avoid a system restart, ensure that all of the minimum software requirement prerequisites detailed in the "Microsoft prerequisites" section of this document are installed before you start the IBM Storage Protect Snapshot MMC and Base System Services installation process.
Metadata space In addition to the space that is required for the global product installation, IBM Storage Protect Snapshot uses disk space to hold vital product data that is used to track and manage snapshots. By default, the metadata is stored in the 'vss_staging' subdirectory of the IBM Strorage Protect Snapshot VSS Requestor component's installation directory.
Note: The IBM Storage Protect Snapshot VSS Requestor component is also known as the IBM Storage Protect™ Backup-Archive Client.

The amount of space required is directly proportional to the number of snapshots that you maintain on the system. Ensure that there is at least 1 megabyte of available free disk space to hold the metadata for each snapshot that you plan to keep on the system.
