Abstract

This document details the Hardware & Software requirements for the IBM Spectrum Protect™ VSS Requestor 8.1.14 component.

Content

The IBM Spectrum Protect Snapshot VSS Requestor component supports:

  • VSS operations in Microsoft Exchange environments
  • VSS operations in Microsoft SQL Server environments
  • VSS operations for the File System and Custom Application feature contained in the MMC Snap-in and Base System Services component.

Software requirements

Following information describes the minimum software and operating system requirements when you use the IBM Spectrum Protect Snapshot VSS Requestor component.

Note: Windows Storage Server 2012 and 2012 R2 are only supported for functionality that is also available and supported by the IBM Spectrum Protect Snapshot VSS Requestor component on Windows Server 2012 and 2012 R2 Editions.


 

More software prerequisites

  • Microsoft prerequisites
    The following prerequisites from Microsoft are required and must be installed before using the IBM Spectrum Protect Snapshot VSS Requestor 8.1.14 component:
    • Windows PowerShell 3 or Windows PowerShell 4
    • Windows Management Framework 3 or Windows Management Framework 4
       
    The following prerequisites from Microsoft are also required, and are installed automatically by the IBM Spectrum Protect Snapshot VSS Requestor 8.1.14 if not already present on your machine.
    Note: Installation of these prerequisites might require a system restart. To avoid a system restart, ensure that these prerequisites are installed before starting the IBM Spectrum Protect Snapshot VSS Requestor installation process.
    Note: These prerequisites are not automatically installed when you create your own silent installation package to install by using msiexec. In that scenario, you must manually ensure that the prerequisites are installed.

     
  • 64-bit VSS Requestor 8.1.14 requires:

VSS provider requirements

The VSS provider is the snapshot component used to create and manage the volume shadow copies. This component might use snapshot capable storage subsystems that implement a VSS Hardware Provider that strictly adheres to the Microsoft VSS provider interface.

IBM Spectrum Protect Snapshot for Microsoft Exchange Server, IBM Spectrum Protect Snapshot for Microsoft SQL Server, and the File System and Custom Applications support feature will support any VSS Provider (including the Windows Systems Provider) that strictly adheres to the Microsoft VSS Provider interface.

More external storage devices supported by IBM Spectrum Protect Snapshot on Windows are documented in the section External storage devices supported by VSS operations.

Refer to the documentation that was shipped with your VSS Provider in order to understand the software and hardware requirements of your specific VSS Provider.
Note: If you do not install a separate VSS Provider, the Windows System Provider will be used by default.
 

  • Base VSS Provider requirements
    Ensure that any Microsoft hot fixes required by the VSS hardware provider used in your environment are installed. These might include, but are not limited to, hotfixes related to:
    • Host Bus Adapter (HBA)
    • Multipath I/O (MPIO)
    • Volume Shadow Copy Service (VSS)
    • Virtual Disk Service (VDS)
    • Hotfix KB 3137726 is required when you perform VSS instant Restore operations with ResyncLun API in a Windows Server 2012 environment
    • Hotfix KB 3095663 and 3137728 are required when you perform VSS instant Restore operations with ResyncLun API in a Windows Server 2012 R2 environment.
      Note: Before you install 3137728, install the April 2016 cumulative fix, see: https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/security/ms16-apr.aspx
    • KB4088889 (CU update 2018-03) or later is required when you perform VSS instant Restore operations in a Windows Server 2016 environment
       
  • More VSS Provider requirements
    When you use any of the following capabilities a VSS provider that support transportable shadow copies must be used:
    • VSS Off-loaded backups
    • Import VSS snapshots only when needed
    • SQL Clone Function
    • Mounting VSS snapshots to remote servers
       
  • More VSS Provider requirements for Instant Restore operations
    To enable Instant restore for non-IBM devices, the following is required:
  • More VSS Provider requirements for Non-Persistent MountRW operations
    To enable Instant Non-Persistent MountRW operations for IBM devices, the following is required:
    • IBM SAN Volume Controller (SVC) family storage devices.
    • IBM System Storage Support for Microsoft Virtual Disk and Volume Shadow Copy Services version 4.12 or higher.
    • IBM XIV and IBM FlashSystem family storage devices
    • IBM XIV Provider for Microsoft Windows Volume Shadow Copy Service 2.9 or higher


 

External storage devices supported by VSS operations

Note: For a table that depicts storage architecture support for the IBM Spectrum Protect Snapshot product as it relates to platform and restore functionality, see: Storage Architecture Support for IBM Spectrum Protect™ Snapshot and Tivoli Storage FlashCopy Manager

  • Any storage device that implements the VSS provider interface as defined in the VSS Provider Requirements section of this document.
    Note: These devices are not supported for Instant Restore operations unless also listed in the following list of devices that are tested with IBM Spectrum Protect Snapshot 8.1.14 on Windows.
  • One of the IBM System Storage DS3000/DS4000/DS5000 family of devices, as supported by the LSI Microsoft VDS/VSS Provider 10.60.G0.04 and later maintenance levels, new releases, and new versions.

The following devices implement the VSS provider interface as defined in the VSS Provider Requirements section of this document, and are tested with the IBM Spectrum Protect Snapshot 8.1.14 on Windows components, with Instant Restore operations:

  • IBM System Storage SAN Volume Controller (SVC): 7.1.x with:
    IBM System Storage Support for Microsoft Virtual Disk and Volume Shadow Copy Services 4.5.130528, and later 4.5.x maintenance levels, new releases, and new versions.
  • IBM System Storage SAN Volume Controller (SVC): 7.2.x with:
    IBM System Storage Support for Microsoft Virtual Disk and Volume Shadow Copy Services 4.7.0.1, and later 4.7.x maintenance levels, new releases, and new versions.
  • IBM System Storage SAN Volume Controller (SVC): 7.3.x with:
    IBM System Storage Support for Microsoft Virtual Disk and Volume Shadow Copy Services 4.8, and later 4.8.x maintenance levels, new releases, and new versions.
  • IBM System Storage SAN Volume Controller (SVC): 7.4.x with:

Hardware requirements

Following information describes the minimum hardware and disk space requirements when you use the IBM Spectrum Protect Snapshot VSS Requestor 8.1.14 component.

  • A minimum of 930 MB of disk space for the product to be installed.
  • At least 46 MB disk space for "Microsoft prerequisites", which will be installed automatically if they are not already installed on the system when you start the FlashCopy Manager VSS Requestor component installation.
    Note: Some of the prerequisites defined in this document might require a system restart. To avoid a system restart, ensure that all of the minimum software requirement prerequisites detailed in the " Microsoft prerequisites " section of this document are installed before you start the IBM Spectrum Protect Snapshot VSS Requestor installation process.
