Getting a warning message 'You do not have the correct administrator privileges' when attempting to license a SPSS Statistics product on Mac OS.

Troubleshooting


Problem

You successfully installed an IBM SPSS Statistics product on a Mac computer. When you start the License Authorization Wizard (LAW) to enter the authorization code for licensing. You receive the following message: "Warning! You do not have the correct administrator privileges to license this product. Log in as administrator and try again, or contact your network administrator to correct this issue. " Once this message is displayed the only option available is "OK" and you cannot enter your authorization code.

Resolving The Problem

If you encounter this message, perform the following procedure:
If open, close the IBM SPSS Statistics product.

Statistics Release 28 and after and Statistics Subscription

  1. If open, close the License Authorization Wizard.
  2. Open Finder.
  3. Select the 'Go' menu.
  4. Select the 'Utilities' menu.
  5. Open the Terminal program (/Applications/Utilities/Terminal.app)
  6. Type (copy and paste) the following command to change directory to the SPSS Statistics installation folder: cd /Applications/
  7. Press the Enter or Return key on the keyboard.
  8. Type (copy and paste) the following command: sudo chown -R root:admin "IBM SPSS Statistics"
  9. Press the Enter or Return key on the keyboard.
  10. Close Terminal.
  11. Launch the License Authorization Wizard.
  12. License your IBM SPSS Statistics product.

Statistics Release 27

  1. If open, close the License Authorization Wizard.
  2. Open Finder.
  3. Select the 'Go' menu.
  4. Select the 'Utilities' menu.
  5. Open the Terminal program (/Applications/Utilities/Terminal.app)
  6. Type (copy and paste) the following command to change directory to the SPSS Statistics installation folder: cd /Applications/
  7. Press the Enter or Return key on the keyboard.
  8. Type (copy and paste) the following command: sudo chown -R root:admin "IBM SPSS Statistics 27"
  9. Press the Enter or Return key on the keyboard.
  10. Close Terminal.
  11. Launch the License Authorization Wizard.
  12. License your IBM SPSS Statistics product.

Statistics Release 26

  1. If open, close the License Authorization Wizard.
  2. Open Finder.
  3. Select the 'Go' menu.
  4. Select the 'Utilities' menu.
  5. Open the Terminal program (/Applications/Utilities/Terminal.app)
  6. Type (copy and paste) the following command to change directory to the SPSS Statistics installation folder: cd /Applications/IBM/SPSS/Statistics/
  7. Type (copy and paste) the following command: sudo chown -R root:admin 26
  8. Close Terminal.
  9. Launch the License Authorization Wizard.
  10. License your IBM SPSS Statistics product.

Statistics Release 25

  1. If open, close the License Authorization Wizard.
  2. Open Finder.
  3. Select the 'Go' menu.
  4. Select the 'Utilities' menu.
  5. Open the Terminal program (/Applications/Utilities/Terminal.app)
  6. Type (copy and paste) the following command to change directory to the SPSS Statistics installation folder: cd /Applications/IBM/SPSS/Statistics/
  7. Type (copy and paste) the following command: sudo chown -R root:admin 25</code
  8. Press the Enter or Return key on the keyboard.
  9. Close Terminal.
  10. Launch the License Authorization Wizard.
  11. License your IBM SPSS Statistics product.
 

To confirm the changes have been made

(1) In the Terminal window change directory to the following path (example for release 26)

cd /Applications/IBM/SPSS/Statistics/26/SPSSStatistics.app/Contents

Then, type the following:

ls -l

(2) Press the Enter or Return key on the keyboard.

If you see some or all of subfolders shows a group ownership other than 'admin' (as displayed in Picture1), the procedure did not succeed.
