In IBM i 7.4 and IBM i 7.3, MI instruction Generate Universal Unique Identifier (GENUUID) can now generate a version 4 Universally Unique IDentifier UUID, which is randomly generated in a way that is consistent with the Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF) specification as described in in RFC 4122

Prior to this enhancement GENUUID generated only a version 1 UUID, which uses time, date, and a unique system identifier to create the UUID.  Version 4 allows a more random UUID.

The GENUUID instruction has a broad range of use cases, from tagging objects with an extremely short lifetime to reliably identifying very persistent objects across a network.

This support is available with the base release of IBM i 7.4, and later releases.  It is also available with IBM i 7.3 PTF MF67674.

See IBM i Knowledge Center GENUUID MI Instruction for more information.
