Fix Central and FTP Download - Getting the CD Image File into a Virtual Media Device

Troubleshooting

Problem

This document provides information on the Web page that provides instructions on how to get PTF image files that were ordered from Fix Central using the FTP option to a virtual media device.

Resolving The Problem

There is a new feature with Fix Central to choose FTP as the delivery method. Therefore, if a PTF is too large to download or is marked media delivery only (for example, IBM iSeries Access Service Packs, BRMS), rather than being mailed on CD, the CD image is copied to a FTP server for you to download.

If running IBM OS/400 R520 or later, these CD images can be downloaded directly into the Integrated File System and then loaded into a Virtual Media Catalog (see instructions below). If planning for an earlier release of OS/400, download the CD image file to a PC, and write this image file to CD. Then, the PTFs are loaded in the usual way.

If the Fix Central order goes to the FTP method of delivery, the summary page at the end of the Fix Central order will advise you of this. An e-mail is sent with the following title:

CCSSDK ORDER# xxxxxxx RESPONSE1 where xxxxxxx is the order tracking number for this PTF order.

This e-mail advises you that the order was received successfully and that the copy of the PTFs to the FTP site is beginning. Once the PTFs are copied to the FTP site, another e-mail is sent with the following title:

CCSSDK ORDER# xxxxxxx RESPONSE2

This e-mail includes details of how to access the FTP site and download the CD image file to your PC or IBM iSeries family of servers system.

To get the CD image file loaded into a Virtual Media device, do the following:

1.Create a Virtual CD Device, and vary this on (this can be reused so will not need to be done every time). On the operating system command line, type the following:

CRTDEVOPT DEVD(OPTVRT01) RSRCNAME(*VRT) TEXT('Virtual Media CD Device')

Press the Enter key.
2.To vary on the device, on the operating system command line type the following:

WRKCFGSTS CFGTYPE(*DEV) CFGD(OPTVRT01)

Press the Enter key. Select Option 1 against the device.
3.To create a Image Catalog (do this the first time only), on the operating system command line type the following:

Note: Specify CRTDIR(*YES) only if the directory specified in the DIR parameter does not exist.

CRTIMGCLG IMGCLG(IPTF) DIR('/iptf') CRTDIR(*YES) TEXT('Image Catalog for iPTF FTP orders')

Press the Enter key.
4.To add the downloaded image file to the Image Catalog, on the operating system command line type the following:

WRKIMGCLGE IMGCLG(IPTF)

Select Option 1 to Add (ADDIMGCLGE), and specify From image file to be path where you have downloaded the image file to:

/download/iptf0050.bin

where download is the directory in the Integrated File System where the image file called iptf0050.bin was downloaded.
5.This should then show as loaded (for example, in the Virtual Media CD Changer) or mounted (for example, in the Virtual Media Drive).
6.To associate the Image Catalog with the Virtual CD Device, on the operating system command line type the following:

LODIMGCLG IMGCLG(IPTF) DEV(OPTVRT01) OPTION(*LOAD)

Press the Enter key.
7.Once this has been done, use the WRKIMGCLGE command to show a status of Ready.
8.Load the PTFs using GO PTF, Option 8, specifying the Virtual CD Device (for example, OPTVRT01).

Installing PTFs using image catalog

For further assistance, the video below lists the steps to create an image catalog, add image entries, load the image catalog into a virtual optical device, and load/apply PTFs from the image catalog.
