"Faulting application name: cogbootstrapservice.exe ... 0xc0000374" error (in Event Viewer) when starting 'IBM Cognos' service

Troubleshooting

Problem

Administrator logs onto the application server, and starts the 'IBM Cognos' Windows service. Afterwards, administrator opens the Windows Event Viewer 'Application Log'. There is an error entry in there. A similar error occurs when the service is stopped.

Symptom

Event Viewer:
Faulting application name: cogbootstrapservice.exe
version: 10.2.6101.12
time stamp: 0x54ad5870
Faulting module name: ntdll.dll
version: 6.3.9600.18696
time stamp: 0x59153753
Exception code: 0xc0000374
Fault offset: 0x00000000000f1c00

Cause

Limitation (reference APAR PM20317) of Cognos BI engine.
  • This limitation is triggered by Microsoft DEP.

More Information:

When the Cognos BI engine starts, it runs a process called 'cogbootstrapservice.exe'. Microsoft Windows DEP monitors this process, and creates an entry in the Event Viewer log.

  • However, the Cognos BI engine is unaffected - it continues to start/work OK.

Resolving The Problem

Fix:

Ignore the error - it is benign.

Workaround:

Disable Microsoft DEP on the Controller application server.
