Cause
The Controller application server needs to have some Microsoft Analysis Services DLL files installed on the server. This is so that the Application server (specifically the COM+ application 'COGNOSCONTROLLER' or 'IBMCOGNOSCONTROLLER' depending on version) has the ability to publish MSAS Data Marts (OLAP cubes).
Resolving The Problem
Install the *same* version of Microsoft Analysis Services on the Controller application server as you are trying to publish to (e.g. install MSAS 2000 if you are trying to publish to a MSAS 2000 target server). Afterwards, upgrade to the latest Microsoft MSAS Service Pack. Finally, disable the Analysis Services service (on the application server) to conserve system resources.
Steps:
Microsoft Analysis Server 2000 (for example, if using Controller 2.x, 8.1.x and 8.2.x):
- Obtain a short period of downtime
- Logon to Controller application server as an administrator
- Insert the SQL 2000 cd-rom
- Choose 'SQL Server 2000 Components' from the 'autorun' menu
- Choose 'Install Analysis Services'
- Follow the wizard to perform a default installation
- Download MSAS 2000 SP4 ("SQL2000.AS-KB884525-SP4-x86-ENU.EXE") from the Microsoft website. IMPORTANT: This (MSAS 2000 SP4) is DIFFERENT from the 'normal' MS SQL 2000 SP4.
- Double-click on SQL2000.AS-KB884525-SP4-x86-ENU.EXE to extract it to the default folder
- Launch the file C:\SQL2KSP4\msolap\install\setup.exe and perform a default install
- After the installation has finished, right-click on 'My Computer' and choose 'Manage'
- Open 'Services and Applications' and then 'Services'
- Stop and disable the Windows service 'MSSQLServerOLAPService'
- Reboot Controller application server
- Test
Microsoft Analysis Server 2005 (for example, if using Controller 8.3.x or higher):
- Obtain a short period of downtime
- Logon to Controller application server as an administrator
- Insert the SQL 2005 cd-rom
- Choose 'Install - Server components, tools, Books Online, and samples' from the 'autorun' menu
- Choose 'Analysis Services'
- Follow the wizard to perform a default installation
- Afterwards, download the latest MSAS 2005 service pack (e.g. SP3), for example 'SQLServer2005SP3-KB955706-x86-ENU.exe', from the Microsoft website.
- Double-click on SQLServer2005SP3-KB955706-x86-ENU.exe and follow the wizard to upgrade the MSAS version
- After the installation has finished, right-click on 'My Computer' and choose 'Manage'
- Open 'Services and Applications' and then 'Services'
- Stop and disable the Windows service 'SQL Server Analysis Services (MSSQLSERVER)'
- Reboot Controller application server
- Test
