Deprecation of app approval in managed Google Play and its impact on MaaS360 app management

Release Notes

Abstract

Google announced deprecation of app approval in managed Google Play. To align with Google’s strategy, MaaS360 will disable app approval in the MaaS360 portal effective 10.87 release. This deprecation will impact app management workflows in MaaS360 that currently use app approval APIs.

  • Administrators are no longer required to approve permissions when adding Managed Google Play apps to the App Catalog. In the previous releases, it was mandatory for administrators to approve permissions in order for those apps to be distributed to Android Enterprise devices. Effective 10.87, the Approve Permissions window is no longer displayed when adding the apps to the App Catalog.

  • Since the disparity between approved and unapproved apps is removed, unapproved apps that were previously deployed to Android Enterprise devices will now be available for those devices. In the previous releases, the unapproved apps could be deployed to Device Admin devices only.
  • In the previous releases, the distribution count for unapproved apps accounted only for Device Admin devices. Effective 10.87, Android Enterprise devices will also be considered for app distribution count.
  • The pending app permission icon is no longer displayed in the list view and the app summary view.

  • Google Play stops generating EMM notifications for events such as new app updates and OEM/App config template changes. MaaS360 will run a batch job to pull information about the latest events from the managed Google Play Store. When new events are available in the Play Store, it can take up to a week for the app's data to refresh in MaaS360 App Catalog.
