Data not mapped as geospatial in IBM Cognos Analytics 11.0.5+

Troubleshooting

Problem

Data representing ie. a country or a state is used in a dashboard, however it is not recognized as geospatial data and can therefore not be used in maps.

Symptom

Column is not recognized as geospatial. Geospatial data is represented by a little icon, like so:

Resolving The Problem

If the data is based on an uploaded file rename the column to contain Country or St (for State). If this is not possible, then perform the following steps:

  1. Create a new data module
  2. Select the source containing the geospatial data, this could be (but is not limited to) a data server or an uploaded file.
  3. Drag and drop the data into the data module
  4. Select the Properties of the column, that represents geospatial data
  5. Set the property Represents to Geographic Location and the appropriate Type.

Please note: IBM Cognos Analytics 11.0.5 only visualizes Country and Province/State in a map. For more information refer to the FAQ referenced below.
