Creating Multiple Copies of Backup Data

Question & Answer

Question

Multiple backup copies of data can be created and kept in different locations.

Cause

Corporate policies may require two or more backup copies of all data be created and kept in two different locations.

Answer

The following configurations will cause Tivoli Storage Manager/IBM Spectrum Protect to create multiple backup copies of client data and store them in different locations:

1. Use copy storage pools. Once data is backed up to a primary storage pool use the backup storage pool function to create a second copy of this data in a copy pool that is in a different location or that it can be sent to a different location for safe keeping. This is basically using the disaster recovery capabilities of Tivoli Storage Manager/IBM Spectrum Protect. A variation of this approach is to use the simultaneous write function to create the copy storage pool copy of the data at the time the data is first written to the primary storage pool.

2. Use two different nodenames on the same client backing up all the data from the one machine twice. Each backup would used a different nodename and each nodename could belong to a different domain with a policy structure that has different storage pool destinations in different locations. This will provide two primary backup copies in different locations.

3. Use two different Tivoli Storage Manager/IBM Spectrum Protect servers and backup the same client to each server who will in turn have storage pools in different locations.

4. With a Tivoli Storage Manager/IBM Spectrum Protect 6.3 and above server node replication can be used to replicate backup data from one Tivoli Storage Manager/IBM Spectrum Protect server to another. For further details on node replication see the Tivoli Storage Manager 6.3 Server manuals on this topic:
