How do I cable my UPS to my model 520 or model 570 IBM Power Systems Server?
Resolving The Problem
Important Note: Extensive information on UPS connections for IBM Power Systems hardware is in the hardware information center at the following URL:

Required fix: Model 520 systems must have fix level SF225_096 or higher.
Required cable: Before connecting a UPS to your model 520 or model 570 IBM Power Systems server, you will need a UPS cable converter, feature code 1827, part number 97P4299 (the RHOS compliant part number is 39J5836). (At some point, UPS manufacturers may provide the converter cables with the UPS or they may provide a UPS sensing cable that will not need the converter; however, for now, FC1827 can be ordered from IBM.)

For the model 570 and rack mounted model 520: Connect the UPS sensing cable to the top serial port (the serial ports are located on the back of the system unit to the far left).
For the desktop model 520: Connect the UPS cable to the right serial port (the serial ports are located on the back of the system unit at the very top).
Note: After connecting the UPS cable, the server must be shut down and the power cable removed before the UPS will be recognized by the service processor.
1827 UPS Cable: 1827 is a 140 mm (5.5 in.) serial port to UPS converter cable for Power Systems models 520 and 570. The models 520 and 570 no longer have the J14 UPS connector that has been traditionally used on Power Systems servers. Instead, UPS communications to the Power Systems models 520 and 570 is supported through a designated serial port using the 1827 cable. See Figures 1 and 2.

Notes:
1. After the UPS Cable is attached, a deep server IPL is required to detect the presence of the cable. A deep server IPL can be accomplished through a disruptive activate of the server firmware from the HMC or by powering off the server and removing the A/C power temporarily. To perform a disruptive activate of the server firmware, you should refer to the following URL: http://publib.boulder.ibm.com/infocenter/powersys/v3r1m5/index.jsp?topic=/ipha5_p5/work_t_p_hmc.htm
2. Not all OEM UPS cables have pin 8 (UPS On). The interface will still work for low battery/utility power lost/bypass messages. They will need to unplug the system to test the UPS interface for the utility power lost message. This message is displayed in qsysopr message queue or history log. You should make sure the system is in a restricted state to minimize possible outage if UPS does not provide continuous power. Also verify that system value QUPSDLYTIM is not set to zero or a low value. If power is removed during testing for longer than qupsdlytim, the system will start a power down.

Referring to the following diagram, connect side B of the serial to UPS converter cable (with the external threads) to the top port on the back of your system. Connect side A of the serial to UPS converter cable (with the internal threads) to the vendor-supplied UPS cable. |
