Troubleshooting


Problem

Report runs successfully but an error occurs saving the report output.
CM-REQ-4268 The multipart request is invalid. The posted content length of N exceeds the limit of 500000000.
RSV-DST-0014 Unable to deliver the output of the report.

Cause

By default the maximum size of a report output file that can be saved in the Content Store in Cognos Analytics 11.0 and 11.1 is 500 Mb.
If the report that is being run and saved results in output (HTML, PDF, Excel, CSV, etc.) that exceeds 500 Mb, the message will occur.
In Cognos Analytics 11.2 the default maximum size for a saved report is 2,000,000,000 bytes, approximately 2Gb, and should not be increased beyond this size.

Resolving The Problem

If there is no practical business need for a report that exceeds 500Mb the report that is generating the saved output can be reviewed to determine if it should be modified to produce a more usable and practical output file size that meets the business need.
The following Content Manager advanced setting can be applied to increase the size limit.
Steps:
  1. Go to the Cognos Administration console
  2. On the Status tab, click System
  3. In the Scorecard panel, click the arrow beside All servers and select Services > Content Manager
  4. Click the arrow next to ContentManagerService and select Set properties, click Settings tab
  5. Edit Advanced Settings
  6. Check 'Override the settings acquired from the parent entry' if needed.
  7. Add the parameter CM.MULTIPARTREQUESTMAXLENGTH and set the value to larger than the 'posted content length' in the error message.
Note that the CM.MULTIPARTREQUESTMAXLENGTH setting should not exceed 2gb, or 2000000000 because most databases limit the size of BLOB columns used for storing large data to 2GB.
