Abstract
Does IBM Rational ClearCase support the Microsoft Windows 7 operating system?
Content
Rational ClearCase clients are supported on Windows 7.
IBM Rational ClearCase version 7.1.1 added support for Microsoft Windows 7 with certain known issues and limitations as listed below. Some limitations have been removed in ClearCase 7.1.2. Refer to the Limitations section below for further information.
Note: Microsoft Windows 7 is supported with ClearCase 7.1.1 and later. Windows 7 SP1 (supported in 7.1.1.6 or 7.1.2.3 or later) is recommended. There are no plans to provide support in earlier ClearCase versions.
IMPORTANT: Before reviewing the following table, refer to the Known Issues and Limitations sections below for a list of known restrictions and limitations with the release of ClearCase support on Windows 7. ClearCase 8.0 support data for the table below has been incorporated into System Requirements for ClearCase 8.0.
Version | Server | Client | Operating System | Platform | Comments |
ClearCase 7.1.1 | No | Yes | Windows 7 Professional Edition Enterprise Edition Ultimate Edition | 32-bit 64-bit *
CCRC Eclipse IDE (plug-in) 7.1.1 | -- | Yes | --
**CCRC RCP Client 7.1.1 | -- | Yes | -- | --
Change Management (CM) Server 7.1.1 | No | -- | -- | -- | CM Server is not supported |
Global Monitor 7.1.1 | Refer to technote 1415015 for supported platform and version information. |
** ClearCase Remote Client (CCRC) Rich Client Platform (RCP) is also known as the stand-alone CCRC client.
Note: For the purposes of this technote, ClearCase Server is defined as a host storing VOBs. You can store views on a Client. With respect to MultiSite, this installation is designed for servers only. Clients do not need MultiSite installed to access replicated VOBs.

Known Issues:
- When installing ClearCase 7.1.1 on Windows 7, IBM Installation Manager will warn that the operating system is unsupported:
You are attempting to install on an unsupported operating system.
Resolution : You can ignore this warning and continue to install the product. This issue is fixed in a subsequent ClearCase 7.1.1 fix pack.
- When running ClearCase 7.1.2 or 8.0 with UAC enabled, certain command line operations which require administrator privilege will return errors even when run by a user who is in the Administrators group.
Some examples of such commands and the ensuing errors are:
cleartool getcache -mvfs -reset
cleartool: Error: Unable to enable MVFS privileges
cleartool setcache -mvfs -persistent_only { ... cache value seting(s) ...}
cleartool: Error: Unable to set persistent MVFS parameters: error detected by ClearCase subsystem.
cleartool setcache -mvfs { ... cache value seting(s) ...}
cleartool: Warning: One or more requested parameters affect other cache values that cannot be changed until you make the changes persistent and restart ClearCase.
cleartool: Error: Unable to enable MVFS privileges
mvfslog.exe { ... logging options ...}
mvfslog.exe: Error: Unable to enable MVFS privileges.
mvfsstat.exe { ... statistics options ... }
mvfsstat.exe: Unable to enable MVFS privileges
rgy_passwd
Password: { ... }
rgy_passwd: Error: Error 5 setting registry password in the NT registry.
Workaround: These commands will succeed if they are invoked from a cmd shell that was started with the "Run as administrator" option.
Refer to technote 1444765 for a list of additional known issues that can occur when using ClearCase with User Account Control (UAC).
NOTE: Support for UAC and BitLocker on Windows 7 was added with ClearCase 7.1.2.
Limitations:
- ClearCase version 7.1.1 clients are supported in Windows 7 with UAC turned off.
Refer to technote 1399262 Windows UAC support and ClearCase for further information.
- ClearCase version 7.1.1 clients are supported in Windows 7 with BitLocker turned off.
Refer to technote 1421258 BitLocker support with ClearCase on Windows for further information.
- The Eclipse version bundled with the CCRC RCP in 7.1.x, which is Eclipse 3.3.1.1, does not officially support Windows 7. CCRC RCP 7.1.x is supported on Windows 7 to the extent possible given the constraints of Eclipse 3.3.1.1 support. The Eclipse version bundled with CCRC and ClearTeam Explorer (CTE) RCP in version 8.0, which is Eclipse 3.6.2, is officially supported on Windows 7.
