Question & Answer
Question
Customer notices the large "zst" files created in "/crypt/pgbackrest_repo/" directory. What are they and can they be deleted?
Answer
The "zst" files are WAL files that created by the soarSystemBackup utility pgBackRest repository, as the "/etc/pgbackrest/pgbackrest.conf" specified,
repo1-path=/crypt/pgbackrest_repo
repo1-retention-full=7
repo1-retention-full-type=time
compress-type=zst
The "zst" transaction logs be retained as WAL, are kept with backups (incremental and full). The duration is controlled by retention policies. The current default is 7-days, which means 14 days due to the way files are expired. You can change the setting of the line,
repo1-retention-full=<n>
Where <n> is the number of days (for example, 3).
The WAL will be kept 7 days as the default setting. When the next "pgbackrest" starts, the old WAL file is removed.
