Can SFTP be used to send a pre-encrypted file?

Question & Answer

Question

Can SFTP be used to send a pre-encrypted file?

Answer

Yes, but doing so will provide double encryption of the file.  A third party product will encrypt and decrypt the file on each end.  SFTP will encrypt and decrypt the file during transport.

To send an encrypted file from the mainframe, the file must be encrypted first.  Then the encrypted file will be offline added to the VBQ.  Then the file can be sent to the remote, via SFTP which will also encrypt the file during transport.  The SFTP remote will decrypt the file at the end of the transport and store the encrypted file which will be decrypted by the same product that encrypted it in the first place.
