Application protocol used by FlexNet license Manager to communicate with licensed clients

Question & Answer

Question

Does FlexNet license Manager have application protocol (for example RDP, HTTP, FTP, RPC) to communicate with licensed clients?

Cause

Network security team needs the information to provide access to the licensing components.

Answer

IBM Rational licensed applications communicates to the license server only via the following daemons for a floating license key:

  • lmgrd - license manager daemon
  • telelogic/rational/ibmratl - vendor daemon.

Both of the above daemons use TCP protocol to communicate and the application layer protocol used in FLEXnet Publisher is a proprietary protocol over TCP/IP. Flexera do not use SSL/TLS between vendor daemon and a Flex-Enabled clients.

(However, lmadmin [application that controls the license server] uses HTTP/HTTPS in addition to the proprietary TCP/IP protocol to display the administrative content). But the customised Rational License Server does not use the 'lmadmin' application, hence this is just an added information, and not relevant to the discussion above.
