Error description

  • APAR VM66504 provides infrastructure support to prepare a
Single System Image (SSI) cluster that may include any future
IBM Z server and must be installed on all members of the SSI.
Installation of this APAR must be done before any member of the
SSI cluster will be running on a new server.

This APAR accommodates a larger facility list length that
may be presented on a new server. Support of the larger
length on all members of an SSI cluster ensures members with
different list lengths are compatible, and avoids unnecessary
trapping and simulation of the STFLE instruction on existing
    members.

Compatibility checking is adjusted so that a guest running
on an existing member can smoothly relocate to and from a
new server once it joins the SSI cluster and the guest's
relocation domain. Without this APAR on existing members, the
lack of obsolete architectural facilities on a new server
    could unnecessarily impede such relocation.

    Additionally, z/VM's dependency on the
Load-Program-Parameter (LPP) facility is now enforced on
z/VM release 7.2 during CP initialization. This facility is
already included in the 7.2 architecture level set and is
present on all IBM processors supported by z/VM 7.2.

Problem conclusion

Temporary fix

Comments

  • A new server that is added as a member to an SSI cluster
may introduce some incompatibilities with existing servers.
To avoid any potential problems, this APAR adds support to
ensure the new server may be a part of the SSI cluster
and eligible for Live Guest Relocation (LGR).
