Error description

  • The 4 TB real memory support allows the definition and use of
real memory up to the 4 TB line for first-level z/VM
systems, doubling the previously supported 2TB limit for z/VM
7.2. VM66173 also allows overcommitment of total virtual
memory across all guests beyond the 4 TB line,
depending on workload characteristics. The additional
real memory support along with support for 80 processors
allows additional workloads to be consolidated on one
z/VM LPAR running on IBM Z and LinuxONE servers.

    ****************************************************************
With the PTF for APAR VM66173, z/VM 7.2 provides 4 TB real
memory support, an enhancement to the CP DEFINE STORAGE command,
and various other command updates. The 4 TB real memory support
allows the definition and use of real memory up to the 4 TB line
for first-level z/VM systems. Overcommitment of total virtual
memory across all guests beyond the 4 TB level is supported. The
per-guest limit of 1 TB of virtual memory remains unchanged.
With automatic standby memory for guests, a system administrator
can code a more generic DEFINE STORAGE command that does not
need to be updated every time the guest's directory entry
    storage size changes.

    See https://www.vm.ibm.com/perf/reports/zvm/html/ for details of
the performance scaling with the increase in supported real
memory. To support this APAR, new editions of the following
